I have a 1974 duster 360 with power steering. Originally was a 6 cly and the power steering was on it originally. Every since I have owned it (14 yrs) the steering wheel will automatically turn to the right unless You hold the steering wheel in place. I have replaced the power steering pump, the pressure regulator valve on top of the steering sector. still the same problem. I'm guessing the regulator valve on top of the steering sector is allowing too much pressure. Do I need to increase the spring pressure on the check ball or less pressure? I thought the pitman arm might be off center but no matter where you set the steering wheel it will go to the right passenger side all the way till it hits the stop. I am willing to convert it to manual steering' but I need some input as to what parts I need to change out. Just rebuilt all the rubber in the front suspension. I sure would like some expert input on this problem.

Thanks All

From what I gather you have to ajust the valve housing on top of the steering box,by slightly loosening it and tapping it to center it. I haven't yet tried it on mine But mine drifts left. There is a procedure I'm sure in the shop manual.

Jack the car up so the front wheels are off the ground.
loosen the bolts slightly on the valve on top the box,
Start the engine, With a small hammer tap the valve
to the front and then to the back of the car, the wheel will spin
one way then the other way. when you get it centered they will stay straight.
Start the car several times watching the steering wheel if it kicks left or right do a fine adjustment till it stops kicking.

Agree, I remember having to do that many years ago.
Basic process was this:
Had to slightly loosen the top valve body bolts on steering box.
Front wheels off the ground.
Start engine. (Some P/S fluid may leak during the process).
Carefully tap the top housing to slide valve body slightly to either side.
Wheels will stay centered when correctly located.
Shut off engine, tighten the valve body.
Update: Looks like I was Typing at same time a Brian6pack

Ok I took the 2 bolts out and removed the slide valve on top. I see a exposed screw with a spring around it. Is this what I am adjusting to center the steering. Just by sliding it from side to side? It looks like you could adjust the screw for something. The slide on the top fitting had rubber pieces in the holes. I cleaned it. If I can find it I have another top piece somewhere. I may put it on just for grins to see what it does.

Don't take it off. Just slightly loosen the bolts so it can slide front to back NOT side to side.

It is already off. The slide doesn't fit over the screw pin coming out of the steering sector. It couldn't move it back and forth. Must be the wrong part. When you tightened it down it just locked the screw down.

Thanks for the diagram. According to the diagram. Spring 19-57-64 for the lever was in backwards. I'm goin to turn it around to see if that fixes it. I'll have to wait till next week to see. I ordered a pressure hose from rock auto. Mine burst. Too much pressure I guess.

There's three O rings in there that should be replaced if they have never been replaced. They will probably be hard as a rock and you'll have to do it again if you don't do it now. Since you are replacing your high pressure hose you may find leaks coming from other areas of the steering gear once that is fixed. It happened to me the opposite way, I fixed the leaks on the gear and then the pressure hose started leaking. I'm 99% sure the others are correct and it's all in the adjustment. I just did this to my 72 Scamp. The adjustment is very slight. Your sliding it less than an 1/8 of an inch total.

Get a factory service manual. That will help.
