My apologies--probably a silly question but I ask a lot of those...
I need to change the NSS on my a904.
But I can't drain the fluid and must do it as quickly as possible.

I've read that some people jack up the drivers side of the car so the ATF doesn't blast out the threads when the NSS is removed. Does that work? If I jack it up by say 8 inches is that enough?

Why?
I cant risk causing a mess and I must do so as quickly as possible so my landlord doesn't catch me wrenching again (against the terms).

Thank you for any advice :)

Some cities have rules against it but some auto parts stores allow you to work on your car in the parking lot.

Saw a guy do a complete brake job here in the people's republic of Fort Collins

When I did my Dakota nss, it didn't lose but maybe 2 or 3 tablespoons and I didn't do any of that. Buy a bread pan or one of those big flat sheets from the auto parts stores.

And I watched a guy change a transmission in a camaro in the parking lot at autozone once.

I just moved to a new city and have no friends to use their lot

I park in my landlords driveway, and she was very firm about no messy repairs. And I have a bad track record with messes.

I should try the local AutoZone, good thinking... I didnt realize that might be legal.

Thanks guys.

Good to know about the speedo gear too because I also should do that...

I have the parts to do my speedo gear seal I was going to raise the back end up 8 to 10 inches I will find out if it is enough.
I have trans fluid comming out of the melted part of the outer cover of the speedo cable, some how it has been unhooked from one of its retainers for years

Get a disposable foil turkey tray from the grocery store. Or a used cake pan from the thrift store. Put cardboard under that. No reason to spill a drop on the pavement. Drive the drivers side tires on a curb to raise it up.

park at the far end of the walmart or equivalent's parking lot and pile some old clothes in the car so it looks like you live in it. you could probably get away with a motor swap before someone will roust you

Move somewhere more friendly.

Also in some places there are dedicated donut your self shops where they supply the lifts and big tools and you do the work.

Also my buddy is a member of a car club and the club has a shop that it's members can use.

If you are talking about the neutral safety switch, all the ones I've replaced over the years hardly make a mess at all. Replacing the speedo gear will make a mess if you don't use some kind of a fluid drain pan.

I used to replace bottom water heater elements without losing more than a quarter cup od water.

The trick is to have the new part ready to screw in as soon as the old one comes out.

Take the last few threads out on the old one with your left hand (assuming you are right handed) while you have thew one already in your right hand.

Throw or drop the old one if necessary so you can use 2 hands to thread in the new one.
