I have a chance to pick up a 2015 6.4 Hemi out of a 3500 Ram. It has a dead cylinder and we thought it dropped a valve. Put it appears the rocker arm on that cylinder has a lot of play so there may not be internal damage or serious damage. Is it worth picking it up?

Temptingly priced.

There is a new 6.4 crate motor on Craig's list in Denver for $13,000

Yeah I think I'm going to run a bore scope down the dead cylinder to see if I can tell anything. Thanks

Buddy dropped 2 valve seats in a 5.7 300..maybe the valve is hung up on one causing the floppy rocker? $250 is still worth it. Not sure of the 6.4 had the same issue. Rebuilders peen the seats in now after a valve job.

Well we thought we would see something in the valve train when we took the covers off but none are lower or out of sync with the others so ?

A good scope will give you your answer. 250? I’d just roll the dice.

It's a bad cam, guarenteed. Snag that thing! The heads castings are same alloy as Hellcat, ready for boost or compresion. The block will handle gobs of power. Forged crank. Floating pins. For 250, that's a frickin steal. If I were closer to you, I'd double you your money and you wouldn't even have to touch it!!

the bge heads alone are worth the price. I paid $800 for cores. Even if you go with an older bottom end (no VVT) they'll bolt on and rival the "better" ported heads. They require very little clean up (if any).

Well I did secure the engine. Looks like a bad cam.
You have a very good foundation. You can easily make your money back and then some if you decide not to do anything with it. That does have potential to be wicked!

Nice. To prevent a repeat of the cam/lifter failure, I recommend the newest design lifters, pure synthetic oil changes, AND GOOD filter(I like WIX #57899) at no more than 5k miles intervals. I also recommend a pair of ss365 FilterMag oil filter magnets for the oil filter. Constant supply of good, CLEAN oil is key to longevity.

so a bad cam caused the rocker to be loose, where did all that cam material go? Do an autopsy and let us know what you find.
