My advice to you would be to take it to Shawn at River City Differentials in Rancho Cordova. Great guy, excellent work and fair prices.

I’m really wanting to rebuild an learn everything i can. I’m sure there’s somethings i just cannot do. Not really sure till i try.

About the only special tool you will need is a good torque wrench. If you plan on re using the ring and pinion in the 7.25 be sure to use the yellow gear paste and check the gear mesh. Take photos as you will want to put it back like it was. Also check the gear lash prior to disassembly and get it back like it was or as close as possible.
If you are putting in new gears you can check the existing mesh just to see what they were, but you will set the new gears up as new.
Prior to taking it all apart, you should verify that the bearings and seals and other parts needed are available.
Good luck, you learn a lot by doing what you are doing.

You really need a dial indicator too. The backlash on the gears is measured in .00x. Nothing you can't do on those 'cept maybe press them axle bearings on. You can remove old ones with a cold chisel per the FSM.

My advise? Don't do it at all... find an 8 3/4 or even an 8 1/4 and never look back

I have 8 3/4 also, but it’s my sons car he’s 11 and so for now all will stay stock till he turns of age he can do whatever he wants it’s a /6 3 on the tree rebuilding everything new for now. Thanks jesse

Then the 7.25 is plenty good. As long as they're maintained and taken care of, they will last.

Is there something wrong with it? If not I would just pull the cover, pull the axles, clean it up, if the bearing don't have any rough spots or catches just new axle seals and gasket. Don't over think rebuilding it for no real reason, as Rob said they will last forever if you don't abuse it or run it out of oil.

If you must I would give these guys a call and see what they have.

Agree with both of the above posts. OE bearings and gears are plenty good unless they are howling or have excess motion. 7 1/4 rears are fine in low power applications, they get in trouble there if a seal is bad and leaking oil as the 7 1/4 has a really small oil capacity. If it looses any it is really low.

You might need a special tool to remove the gear carrier. I don't know the year changes but, some 7 1/4 rears had shims to adjust the carrier preload and back lash (like the dana, and 8 1/4). You need a case spreader to remove and install the carrier/shims. Other years used threaded adjusters (like the 8 3/4) but you need to go through the axle tube to turn them. There is a torsion bar that has the right size hex ( I think "B" body) that can be used as the tool. I didn't have the correct size torsion bar, so I welded a large nut to a old "A" body bar, and ground the flats on the nut, until it fit the hex in the adjusters.

Personal opinion: I ran 7 1/4's for years, on the street and drag car with slicks and nitrous. and they are not as weak as people think. That said I wouldn't spend much money or time on one, today. It is getting hard to find parts for them. As for sure grip, you might see a SG unit for sale, but I have not seen any replacement clutches for sale in about 8 years. If you do find any, they will be pricey.

About the only thing I ever did to mine was replace the wheel bearings and seals. Clean it up, paint what you can, add fresh lube, and call it good.
