Hello I want to run a 383 on a engine test stand, do I have to locate a bellhousing and flywheel to do this? I only have the 727 automatic, Thanks for the help.

You could make a crank and spin the crank pulley like a model T ( or was that a model A)

BTW, I forgot to mention... This was a joke, it is a bad idea, engine needs a proper flywheel/torque converter for many reasons

Yes, you need a flywheel and a bell housing to mount the starter into.

Otherwise you can use your 727 and block it up off the floor and run it.

You could mock up a mid-plate of sorts, then just use your flex plate and converter for mock-up.... Mount the starter to the midplate and you are set. However, you really should use a manual flywheel instead of a converter if you want to run it. THX KIM FOR POINTING OUT MY ERROR!!

Call Precision of New Hampton. They will sell you the empty front half of a converter with e ring gear on it and you can use that and a bellhousing if you do not have a flywheel. Or if you have an old converter you can cut that apart and gut it and use the front half of it.

^^^ yes, I saw it recently It was just a piece of 3/8 plate holding the starter where it should be and a flywheel. Im sure an empty convertor could work the same. Im gonna mount the whole engine/904 to my test stand and just put a loop on the trans cooler line and a Bayer aspirin bottle in the output shaft seal.

Seems I remember some company makin an adapter for the starter so you could just bolt it on the block? I tried to find it with no success. If you had a busted bellhousing, you could use that and just cut that piece off.

Dont know what is nicer, the motor or the stand! See his motor plate installation? Same thing but on a much grander scale....drool.

@RustyRatRod if you find a picture of that starter plate please post it up. We have a 383 coming up in a month or so to break in on the run stand.

As far as I know the 383 will take the same flywheel as the 318 flywheel that we use here. So won't have to buy another flywheel special for the 383.

Oh OK like the idea of that starter mount plate to use with the run stand.

Was wondering if they got by without supporting the nosecone of the starter, looks like they did.

IIRC,

you need the correct flywheel or the correct torque converter for the engine regardless of how you decide to start your engine on a run stand.

Internally vs externally balanced, plus the flywheel helps with rotational stability (or something like that) as it helps keep the engine rotating.
Flywheel.
My vote would be to use a flywheel, vs a torque converter if you don't have a full automatic to bolt up. Empty torque converter doesn't act like a full one in regards to rotational energy.

I built one from wood I had laying around. But being a stick, it was easy to mount. My friend has one with an empty 727 case that he uses. 1” steel tubing frame with spool mounts. You could probably use a neutral balance converter with the cheap little dinky weight they sell for the externally balanced one if that’s what you need

Turn your big block MOPAR engine over using the starter without a bell housing. 1/4" bare steel plate.

PLEASE NOTE!!! "ONLY FOR THE 130 TOOTH FLYWHEEL"

Here is the 318, 130 tooth, neutral balance flywheel we use.

Used on 318. 340, can use on the 360s with the weighted plate, and now 383s too.

Proof will be in the pudding when it all fits.

360 external balance plate for use with 130 tooth flywheels.

I bought this 10 1/2" 130 tooth flywheel for my 383 magnum I am ready to start on engine stand, I used that plate you can buy on e-bay for 25 bucks. Turns over perfectly. I also used a 10 tooth mini starter... here is the link and picture I took..

If you guys keep your eyes open you can buy the used flywheels that is powerglide use on our conversions. I use the same plates on my big blocks and small blocks. If any needs a picture let me know.

Hello, I looked into that new powerglide conversion flywheel for around $160.-, then I stumbled on this 383 flywheel for $115.- on ebay. Whom ever buys this new engine I built will likely use the 383 flywheel. I like having options, good call Pittsburgh Racer !
