I have located a 8 3/4" 741 case out of a 68 b-body. Drum to drum, open carrier, gear ratio unknown. Guy is asking $150. Does that sound like a good price? Looking for a wider rear to put under my 73 Duster. I would prefer 66-67 as they are slightly narrower, but if the price is right, this one might do. Pinion seal area is pretty grungy looking in the pic I have but it's also obvious that it hasn't been pressure washed or blasted to try to hide anything. Thanks.

If it is not visibly destroying or rotted through then yes. That would be a decent price for just the complete 741 chunk. In my area, I don't see any 8 3/4 rears for anything less than $400-$500 needing a full rebuild. If it is an A body rear or a 67-69 B body, the price usually becomes close to double.

If you want, maybe post some pics and the real gurus can take a quick look at it just to make sure it looks like it wont be a paperweight

This is a complete rear axle assembly with rims and tires on it. Looks like it had the lines cut and was just rolled out from under the car. It looks like it will be worth grabbing. Thanks.

I think I figured out how to get the pics on here. I'm thinking I stumbled into a good deal. Anyone feel free to tell me otherwise if you see something I'm missing.

The bare housing by itself is worth that. Even at $500 you could make money parting it all out if it’s not totally frozen up.

A 68-70 B body 8 3/4 works decently under a Duster/Demon/Dart Sport. It’s what I have in mine. Just move the perches and you’re good to go. With factory offset wheels about the best you can do is a 225/60/15, I ran those for a bit on mine with 15x7’s with a 4.25” backspace. For wider tires on 15’s you’d probably need a custom backspace. But there are a ton of off the shelf 17’s and 18’s that have plenty of backspace to work with the 68-70 B rear.

You better go get that. Even if you don't use it, you can flip it to get more of what you want. I would get it and use it. Narrow the housing to stock A body width and rock on.

I agree with Rusty, good price. And yes it needs a new pinion seal.

It looks like it will be worth grabbing. Thanks.

Uh, yeah, I paid 100 bucks each for the last 2 I bought and they were bare housings.

I moved the perches in, rebuilt the entire rear, swapped in a used clutch type suregrip and new 3:55's, total was around 600 bucks, but that was 8 years ago. The B body rear brought my rear tires out to match the front in width, I am running 15 inch wheels with a 5.5 inch backspace.

price is ok for that unit -- hopefully inside is in better shape than the outside --- i bought one of those outside stored mossy green 8-3/4 rear axles and the pics show what was inside , housing was rotted inside as well

Oh no, $150 is way too much for that piece of junk; good thing you came in here and asked for advice. Where does that crazy fool seller live so I can give him a piece of my mind?

It would be interesting to see how that would turn out after a vinegar/molasses/Evapo-Rust/something else bath. Sometimes the final results surprise you.

The steel wheels can be worth having too, some are hard to find.

Check for part numbers near the valve stem holes.

This is a 489 case that I picked up for a price I just couldn't say no to. I took the risk not knowing if I could save any of it. Long story short it sat for 1 month in $8 worth of white vinegar. Bearings/seals are shot (duh) and I still haven't decided on the ring and pinion. Overall I'm very happy with the results and if it was a locker unit then I would definitely put the work in to save it.

If you don't want your rusty 8.75 center sections, then I'll buy them for the price of shipping and a beer!

Price is "ok"?!

The price is darn good. Even if it's locked up and full of water, there's still probably $150 worth of parts there if you can get it apart. Heck you could probably get $30 just for the pinion snubber. If it's not locked up, which is really easy to check if you go there in person, then you probably have close to $500 worth of parts. I'd have been there the first day I saw it listed to spin it over. If it spins smoothly, it's a steal. If it spins but feels chunky, you could definitely still get more than $150 out of it.

Only way I'd pass on it is if it's locked solid. You could still get your money back if you could get it apart, but there is the risk that it won't come apart if it's locked up solid enough.

Based on a recent distributor removal post, all you need then is a big hammer!

Lol. Well, maybe I should have said “you won’t be able to get it apart in a way that you could still sell the parts afterwards”

Thanks everyone for the responses. I went and grabbed it. It may be a few weeks until I can dig into it and see exactly what I got but it's not stuck.
