Going to Purchase a Mechanic's Stethoscope

Going to break down and make a purchase (will probably not be well constructed). I had a power steering pump replaced today on my spouses 2001 Cherokee and when I get it home I hear a clicking noise. Before I return to the p/s specialty shop, I want to make sure to pinpoint the racket.
 
All I've ever used is a long 3/8 drive extension.
 
I post on message boards with vague details and describe the noise as vrrr vrrr vrrr and wait for the replies on how to fix it. Then I never post a follow-up. Free and easy:rolleyes:
 
On a more serious note. I've had my eye on the Lisle stethoscope.
 
Get one from harbor freight. Quality is about the same as other brands and its dirt cheap. Yeah they work well in most cases.
 
A long screwdriver, a piece of hose are all helpful tools but a stethoscope is much better. You will be amazed at what you will hear.

You can remove the metal probe from the hose and just use the hose .
 
^^^ this. The screwdriver, extension, piece of hose all work good too, as well as electronic types; but this design was and is my go-to first. Its cheap, too. A word of advice - do not have the ear pieces in, when you unscrew the probe end to just use the hose.
