Well, I finally have an out the door running engine price. 5200.00, bored 60, balanced, basically a new engine that will be made into a commando engine..but, really?? 5200.00... nope
 
Ya, that's a stretch. I had $3500+ in mine but that was 12 years ago. Now days I could see it costing $1000 more. My build link is below.
 
No big surprise to me, plus it looks like you're in Cali which is typically more expensive. 65'
 
When I started accumulating stuff to rebuild our 67 Barracuda, I looked high and low for a 273 to replace the junkyard 318. After I looked at prices for a good one to rebuild, plus the cost of the rebuild, I started looking at 318 long blocks. I got real lucky.

An engine retailer on eBay was selling off a batch of 318 long blocks that had been rebuilt by AC/Delco. Not many of us bid - I got one for $600 delivered to a freight center about 25 miles from my house (in TX). I had it mothballed for several years, but I put Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders and turned it over ever so often. No signs of corrosion inside - sounds great so far.

I would have liked to have a rebuilt 273, but I just couldn’t justify the cost.
 
Build a 360 shortblock, and install all the 273- 2bbl finish parts, but with bigger exhaust parts. Then paint it 273 Red, and re-install the 273 pie-plate on it.
Very few people will know the difference, until you give them a ride.

I did this in about 1975 , with a 340 short and a 318 top including heads and cam; into a 65 Valiant wagon. She was a terror in two gears. And the 318 cam made her a drive it anywhere/anytime DD.
