So….more header talk….this had me scratching my head

-
I talked to Chris Hardy agains yesterday at the track for a long time.
He told me for my car( heavy, 3350) and primarily 1/8 miłe ar most events, i would be Best served with a 1 3/4 tube.
Lighter car would like a bigger tube better

How big is your engine? I have tested this enough to know a 1.75 tube on a 340 is on the small side.

We did a dyno test on a 383 chevy. I begged the guy to use 1.875 headers. Of course, he went on the forums and asked there and his buddies all told him 1.750 was on the big side. So he listened to all of them and ordered the smaller headers.

So when I called for the cam, I ordered it for the small headers. It came with a 4 degree split (which I detest) on a 110 LSA. I would have had a single pattern on a 107, but not for the small headers.

We put it on the dyno and it made right at 500 hp like I said it would (forgot to mention I did the heads and flowed them on my bench) and then we put some 1.875 headers on it just for the test. Of course, 3 of his buddies were there to “make sure” we didn’t rig the test.

With the wrong cam it was 20 better at peak and I think it averaged 12 better everywhere. And that was down from what it should have been if the cam was ground for the headers.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken off small headers and put on a big (better) header and went quicker and made more power.

Mine is 418.
He said it might make more power with an 1 7/8 header, but with the weight of my car, it would be quicker to the 1/8 with a 1 3/4 tube.
Which these days has become 90% of my racing.
Certainly debatable, obviously. Just relaying what he said.

I get it. IMO, that’s why the dyno is so important. You can test both, and look at the curves because the curve is what’s important.

Headers on A body stock chassis cars are an exercise in compromise.

Hard to get anything with a big tube to fit without hacking up things or changing k frame/front suspension.

I used to chuckle at some of the claims where going from a hooker 1 5/8 to a tti std step and the engine picked up 50+ hp on a 430hp engine... fun stuff.

I showed Chris that 1 3/4 stainless race header another guy posted about on here the other day.
His comment…that would be perfect….I also showed him the 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 step header that same outfit makes.
He said my car would be faster in the 1/8 being it’s a heavy car with the 1 3/4

LOL…if you were rich and motivated you could test both at the track. I’m not rich and I’m definitely not that motivated but it would be fun to test. Obviously it would be hard to do the same day at the track but you can correct for weather and such.

not rich…lol
My racing budget is 100% my SSI checks. I use them for the car and help with vacations.
We put the business in the wife’s name when we opened, there were and are some benefits to having done it that way.
Our company money is off limits to racing..lol
I work 45-50 hours a week in the store , but for all intents and purposes, am incognito…. So I show no income other than SSI

BTW….I may look into those stainless headers, probably the 1 3/4 ones.
May also look into having my vert adjusted and trans freshened as well this offseason.

Ya there are some sneaky ways of collecting disability insurance that are close to lying

it’s called off the books and on to hers. But some think nothing of that. Hmmmm.

He’s just not getting paid money to work in the family biz. That’s all. The wife is making the money for the household. I see nothing wrong here.

I am not on disability. I am 67. Been drawing my retiree benefit( social security) since I turned 62. That is my SOLE income.
I worked full time since 16 years of age.
My income is my retiree benefit ( I EARNED) not disability. I have never collect a dime from disability or even unemployment
My wife’s income is owner of the company. Our CPA( who also does our taxes every year) set it up this way.
Otherwise, she would have to pay me as an employee, this way, she gets me for free

ohhh I see. That makes it all nice and legal I guess. I’d hate to see you go over what you were Legally allowed to make before being over the max limits of Social Security. Having a good CPA pays dividends for those grey areas.

it indeed does. If I made any more than just SSI…gulp…it wouldn’t make sense fiscally. We are fixing to get about a 9% increase next year because of Biden’s inflation, that might put me over
Meanwhile, I got back from Moparty at 2 Am, am at work, haven’t even unloaded the car and my stuff yet, will soon

Agree. Imo a person would be better off with typical 1 5/8 than 1 7/8.
The diff between 1 5/8 & 1 5/8 to 3/4 step tti was imo a 15-20 hp diff on my 410 combo with 'off idle' tq almost staying the same, 3000 ^ midrange to the top increased.

bearing in mind all those motors are stock stroke. 420 ish inch motor is a different animal from a 340

exactly, not sure why some people have an issue figuring that out.
The reason I started collecting at 62 instead of later is because the more years I work here without getting paid, those zero income years get averaged in and lower your SSI benefit.
I did the math. I will have to live to be a pretty darn old Billy goat to make taking it at 62 a bad decision.

Limited vision is the problem. That’s the problem. No reading between the lines and thoughts on why but just flames for doing so. For myself, it was blatantly obvious. The one thing I know and have seen and heard a lot is how to get things done within the rules. Since the government isn’t exactly on your side when it comes to money and what they take and dispense.

Working the system legally isn’t hard thing to do. It’s not a great thing money wise. But your safe.
Working the system illegally is easy but with bad endings when you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar.

10 cid is a sneeze when the bore size is limited to near the same 4"-4.125" sizing.
Ime/o Builds can be worlds apart and THAT is more a reason imo for what it likes for exhaust.

I ran 1 5/8-1 3/4" TTI step headers on my 340 and they were fine. I think they would've been a restriction on my 408 and I wouldn't even consider them for the 434.

Don, you're playing within the lines, smart move.
