This is may be of interest to some, trying to weld on a new trailer winch mount. I am not there yet. Work in early progress..

New trailer:

Here's the trailer hitch. 1 ton Ram sits high in back, so 7" drop to ball.:

Here's the winch. Similar to my old Superwinch 4500. It's a ComeUp DV-4500i:

I bought an 8" x 8" 1/4" steel plate for the mounting plate along with two 8" x 6" 1/4" steel plates to gusset the thing to the trailer front frame. Trying to revive my welder now. Wish me luck. LOL.

I'm no master fab'er but I'm big on receiver hitch mount winches. If you have more than one tow rig, pay attention to whatever rig is recessed back under the furthest and build it accordingly. Then mount a receiver on the trailer. I have never regretted it, and on my old beater 01 (converted to 4x4) Cummins, I even found a FRONT receiver on C/L

:) Decided to go my own way on this. Drilled the 2 mounting holes in plate tonight. The fairlead pins on this winch though are a bit below flush with the base. So I will need to "dimple" drill clearance for those pins.

I am slow. I drilled 2 top plates (one is a spacer to clear winch fairlead pins from mounting plate). Had 1st side clamped to mounting plate for welding. Put new roll of .030 wire in and pulled trigger. Heat setting 1 and 4 do not light up. I guess my welder is toast after all these years. Damn!

Working still on this. I bought a new Mig welder, Lincoln 140 Pro Mig from Lowes. Box was covered with dust but it was there and appears OK. $650. Bought Harbor Freight 350 lb. welding cart to hold it. $120. Awesome cart! Picture shows old 60 cf gas cylinder (75%argon/25%Co2) on new cart. Went and got an 80 cf cylinder. Maybe soon can pull trigger and weld something LOL.

Don't understand where you are putting that, but I quickly discovered my trailer, 16ft bed, NOT to mount the winch rear of the front header.

I actually converted my trailer to tilt. Never been sorry, but I do need to gusset the tongue a little bit more. This is the old winch, I have since been using "I think" a 2500lb Horrid Freight. Only problem with it is you REALLY have to watch and level wind it, as the drum is too small, and if you don't the cable will pile up and bind

I took the easy way out and used trailer suspension square "U" bolts and shackles plus "C" mounts to make a pair of slip on mounts on my tongue.

I slide the winch on, use it, then slide it off to store and potentially use on another trailer.

Finally welded some metal today. This box will be welded to front trailer frame. I need one more clamp to get it up there.

Here's what I did, when you have a winch disappear, you go a different route than to solid mount it in the open!

Not sure what you guys are pulling up on trailer, M1 Abrams tanks? That dinky HF winch pulls up C bodies with 2 locked up tires on my trailer.

I welded a trailer stake pocket, center front, and made a bracket for the winch that "curled" over and fit into the pocket .
It was secure by the curl over the end, into pocket, pin to hold it in.
It was removable to keep outta weather, and could be used in any stake pocket, making it versatile with a snatch block.
Cheers .

I've got the smallest HF winch as well and I agree it does the job.
Only issue is it's too dang fast!

Removable is the way to go in FL, keeps it out of the daily rainstorms.

Works in any 2" trailer receiver too? , I like it .

I cross drilled the mount so it could go 90* to trailer and also fits in the truck receiver. Makes grabbing cars in odd places much easier to access

The winch mount is an old hitch receiver. I cut the ball mount of of it.

Hi Rob, how in 'ell are ya? Only thing I have against the smaller ones is when you are haulin around 3/4T 4x4 parts trucks LOL. My HF the drum is too small and you must REALLY watch it for level wind.

I mounted a tool box the front frame rails with square u bolts through a 3/8” sandwich plate and welded the 6”x4” winch mount to that. Then bolted the HF 9000lb winch in the tool box to the mount. Cut a hole in the back, mount the fairlead, and ran the cable. Secure and out of the weather. Has worked perfectly for years. Since these pictures I’ve added a battery and I charge it with the trailer plug. And some lights.

Man that is a wide box, how do you back that thing up into tight places with out jack-knifing it into the truck?

I know you won’t believe me when I tell you, so I’ll probably have to do it and take pics, but I can jackknife it damn near 90 degrees before it hits. I do use the hole furthest back (there are two) on my hitch but that’s it. It just works.

Made a base my trailer box and winch base plate to add the winch. Should have taken more pictures but thats all i have.

Lots of great installs here. Thanks! It was surprising to me how few pictures you can find on the internet of winch mounting.

Got the mounting plate assembly welded to trailer yesterday. Struggled a bit on this weld job but it is definitely one with the trailer. I'll let the paint dry a few days and mount the winch.
