So my 71 Duster with a 225 Super Six was running just awful to say the least, since it will be getting the 408 stroker motor at some point in time, I still drive this when its nice out, so I wanted to get it running better.

Order a rebuild kit from Mike's Carbs, with the kit, his instruction sheets and his you tube video I was able to rebuild the BBD Carter 2 barrel carb.

I know for sure that I didn't set all the proper measurements when I rebuilt this carb a number of years ago, it was also missing the aluminum inlet baffle that goes right behind the needle and seat, so I made one up out of scrap aluminum.

I had member Halifax Hops put the dist up on his machine and spin test it for the advance curve.

I know it's suggested that you se the valves with it running, I set them at 12-22 cold, I will go back and set them running at some point in time, bought a couple of clear plastic fuel filters just to make sure I have no debris issues.

That being said, carb rebuild, dist checked out, and valves adjusted, new pcv valve and V/C Gasket, wow what i difference, thing purrs like a kitten, has 20" of vacuum at idle at 950, doesn't die when you put it in gear or turn the A/C on, power brakes work like they should.

Thing is fun to drive now, although it did backfire previously and put a hole in the muffler lol it's not really that loud just kinda annoying, one car done for the time being, onto the next.

Forgot, the right front oil pan bolt was loose, made a mess underneath, i'll take some gunk and the car wash and tune the underside up, no more drip pans yaaa

I thought adjusting valves while running was with Chevys? Been a long while since I had a six though. Glad you got it smoothed out.

In one of my rabbit hole Youtube nights, consensus from the 6 cyl experts pointed towards doing it running, this is my first go around with a six, thought I would set them cold at first and see how it went.

Really didn't feel like making a mess lol, my sprint car i do the, intake closes do the exhaust, exhaust opens do intake....or the ICEO method, thanks, few days until the next storm here, so on the road she goes.

I've always set /6 valves with the engine running

They can be quite snappy when they're in good tune.

Don't really need the cut up valve cover for "running" valve adjustment. But I remember in one of Dad's old Chilton manuals that's how it said to do it ... Basically cut the top off of it... And most of the manifold side of it.

Want to impress your customers …

Bring their car into the shop leave it running , remove the valve cover , adjust the valves , install the valve cover and new gasket , and drive it out .

And they say medical doctors practice on their patients while alive and mechanics work on their patients with the engine off …

But an auto doctor can work on an engine while it’s running also .

Adjusted Chevys that way with my dad when I was a kid. Tried it on a running V8 440 with no success but as mentioned earlier you can idle a slanty down real low to do it. Another thing he taught me with the Chevy was he adjusted down until the motor had a slight skip then backed off and readjusted. He said it removed build up that was sitting in the lifters. Sometimes people would have to readjust a few days later if they didn't do it.

I wanna see somebody adjust valves on a running slant 6 with a lumpy race cam and good adjusters with locknuts. Ain't gonna happen.
