So I have the Rust Free 68 Barracuda Formula S with a newly rebuilt 340 and is my daily driver. It is a barn find and needs the seats refoamed and is missing radio, etc but a very nice interior. The body is almost perfect with no rust anywhere including frame rails! I have all the parts to restore to specs but before I start I wanted to explore selling to someone who has the money and time to do this right. I am not a body guy and so when I explored a sale the most I could get was about $32K because it’s not the original 340 engine.
Now on eBay and other sites I purchased my originals parts to complete the restore project, the parts in the condition on the car are highly sought after and are worth more than double the price I’d get selling whole.
I know real Mopar purists would want this car totally original and restored to preserve the historical aspects of this awesome and rare model….. my question is why not part out?? I am new on this site so I wanted people’s opinion and possibly find a buyer who is really interested in this car in this condition. Please respond kindly knowing this is not my wheelhouse but have been driving 60’s Mopars and doing the mechanic work in my other cars since 1984. Thanks for your comments.

You're not getting 32K in any economy parting this out, and to believe its worth twice that in parts is just... absurd!!

Base on the information provided, I would think $32k is a good price for the car.

Keep in mind you are not a retailer and will likely not get retail prices for parts.

Your question probably depends on how much your time is worth. Do you have the time, skill and space to store a car that may take a year or more to part out?

Lots of work pulling parts, packaging for shipping, and actually collecting payment.

From the perspective of keeping a cool old car on the road, I would sell it whole. If it is just a financial decision, only you can decide if the trouble is worth the money.

I would have to say 4mulas is right! If you do not want to restore it, sell it whole to someone that will, especially if it's a true "S" car. Just my opinion..

Look at the comps on Ebay and classic cars etc. I think you will find 18K is a reasonable fair market value for that car based on the post pictures and non numbers matching 340 ...If you are lucky. You will never get that on a part out. Saving the formula S car is the most important thing! There is a restored Formula s with a non matching 340 on ebay now that they can't sell...for 20 some K and it's pretty damn nice. Look at the comps! Good luck please save the car

The last car I parted out due to the parts were worth more than the whole was a '66 GTO in 1986. Today? It would be crazy. Today classic pony/muscle cars it's opposite. The whole is worth more than the sum of its parts.

I made a whole $1500 profit. Believing I was parts king of the world. Little did I understand the future. Lol.

Here is the one that I am building right now, it to is a 68 fastback formula S 340 car. This car had not seen the sun since 1984, it had some rust behind the rear wheel wells, and just about everything under the hood along with the trans and drive shaft was missing. There were no seats and what interior was there was trashed. The only reason I decided to buy it was because I had a 340 that needed a home and this formula S was a good fit. I am going on five years now with this car, here is what it looked like when I found it and what it looks like today, my point being is that they don't make these anymore and even if it takes you ten years to complete when it is done you will be very happy that you saved it, I know I am I love it. My 9 year old Grandson who knows absolutely nothing about cars tells me that that is the greatest old car he has ever seen and that it is going to be his High School Car when he gets older, it just might be.

Hurts my soul thinking of that being parted out... That's one of my dream cars :)

BTW... by purists you are meaning collectors, a purist would just like to see it running/driving and taken care of :)

You are not likely to get more money by parting it out and you will definitely have parts left that you won't sell that you will have to dispose of..

32 is crazy high.

That's what fairly nice ones are going for.

32k is high but not crazy but would need to be perfect...

68's are harder to find because apparently "everyone" wants them to build Hemi clones with.

My favorite price guide says it should be in #2 condition for 35K-

Add:

man, if you turned down 30K for that thing you should be kicking yourself till next tuesday.

you'd never, ever, ever get 30K parting that out. and what money you could get would take FOR-EV-ERRR to get there. like you'd sell the big stuff right away: motor, trans, rear end, most of the interior, some of the sheet metal (maybe) and then you'd just have this giant carcass with a huge pile of stuff that has all these weird things that only one person wants and it's an odd size and shipping is a billion dollars because they're in like, luxenburg via danville or some bs and they're a cheap *** and don't want to pay shipping. F that noise. it's complete, and rollers sell easy.

Good grief there was a red 68 Formula S 4 speed with a/c sold at auction and someone just mentioned the number $18k and the neigh sayers weren't bashful about bashing.

Could have sold for 32k but now thinks can get double that if parted out? Who ever offered 32k go back and say yes take the 32k and run as fast as you can.

Awesome so you and the other awesome members have guided me in the right direction. I’ll do the interior and put in some modern electronics, keep it mechanically sound, finish putting the badges in place, put some awesome LED headlights for good night vision and leave the body as is, this on some acorns for that classic look and drive the piss out of it as this car is so fun to drive. When I drive it in the ground it will be time to part or find a new owner at the “fair” market price. Love these Cudas and the folks who love and respect them!!!
This is such a cool site!!!

k... if you are going LED headlights.. i change my mind... part it out instead :) So tired of being blinded by them and they don't offer better vision at night...
