Last Saturday it was 95 and humid. the Last 3 rounds they damned near hot lapped us. I can cool my motor down, but after the final round I noticed the transmission (727) was 220-230 degrees.
I have the standard aluminum trans cooler in front of the radiator. Do any of you use one of the DeRale units or something similar and if so where do you have it mounted?

I have allways ran one of the flat plate B&M super coolers. The one I use has 1/2 inch fittings. On my old 73 big block dart. I mounted it right behind the grill opening. The hood latch bracket. But I never ran a temp guage on it so I am not sure if my info will help you

I run a Derale trans cooler in the avatar. 8" converter that stalls at 5000 rpm. At the track, it leaves the line at about 160F and hits 180F at the end of the track (1/4 mile). This Derale unit has its own electric fan so I flip it on after I cross the line. Trans is back to 160F by the time I get back to my pit.

You can see where it's mounted in the pic below in front of the rad support.

I know what you mean about hot lapping. Makes it hard to pick a dial!!

I'm thinking about changing to under the trunk area with the fan on the outside. I'd love to hear from people who have it back there.

Ooof! That is running it hot. If you really like your transmission- a plate cooler is good but a fan driven cooler is better.
Derail makes really nice stuff but expensive.

If you think it’s costing you a race or two look into one of these. My buddy that passed away over the winter came up with this. The company is alive and well.

Jones Transmission Pumps

I have an ATI case and bell on my powerglide. I wouldn’t drill holes in it.

I wouldnt either on a chevrolet trans , they were very very porous compaired to a chrysler hemi trans , understand ur concern even if it is an aftermarket , but 2 small holes stategically placed about the size of a 1 or 2 gal. water sprayer tip wouldnt weaken it that much...

With an aftermarket case you don’t need a transmission shield or even a flexplate shield. You don’t modify cases like this.

I agree with @mopar65. The stacked plate B&M units are among the best. Use the biggest one that will fit.

I would if I was having hot convertor issues , ran 727`s behind a hemi super stock engine for 14 yrsr , ... with absolutely no problems from that ...
ro each his own..

We used to have tube and fin style trans coolers and had the same issue. Since have switched to plate style coolers (ours has no fan) and we don't have an issue with them getting hot anymore. I actually installed a thermostat in mine to help the trans warm up quicker. Ours are mounted in front of the radiator behind the grill.

I think I'm going to try a Derale plate type cooler with the fan on it and mount it under the trunk. If that doesn't do the trick I'll take a look at the Jones product.
I ran my number last weekend when we were hot lapping, I just didn't like to see those trans temps around 220-230 after the pass. Trying to make everything last....
