I went and hooked my battery up backwards. Stuff started to smoke and I thought WTF! There must be a short somewhere. I never turned the key on but after I smacked my head a few times and then tried to start it it just turned over but no fire. How much would have gotten screwed? It's PEI ignition so would the box be all foobard too?

Dont feel bad, Ive done it, LOL

So you swapped it back and it wont start ? You still have power so the fuelable link should be ok. Start by checking for spark. Spark at the plugs ? Sparl at the coil ?

Right now It's friggin freezing around here and it's been snowing for two days straight so I'll check this out a little later. Thanks guys :)

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. When I picked my 1947 Chrysler up from the body shop, I noticed that it discharged, according to the ammeter, when I stepped on the gas, and charged when I left off. The radio worked fabulously. Back in those days, 6 volt cars were positive ground, and both battery cables were black. The body man, who was old enough to know better, followed the one cable to ground, put it on the negative post of the battery, hooked the other one to positive, and sent it out the door. In those days, not a lot of car parts took offense at being hooked up backwards. When I found the mistake at the battery, everything worked normally.

An internet friend of mine used to own a 55 New Yorker, she was on a mini vacation with some friends and spotted the car on a used car lot. They had a heck of a hard time getting it started, they found a replacement 6 volt battery, dropped it on the car and sent her on a test drive. She bought the car, and a few days later had trouble starting the car. Several batteries later, and lots of frustration, she sold the car. The guy who bought it, looked at the car, and said, the battery is in backwards, reversed the terminals, jump started it, and has had no problems since. At least you discovered your mistake before you "off-ed" the car.

I have never done that but I did have a battery explode when I went to start the car. A click-BAM and that was it! What a mess that thing made under the hood. I`ve also heard of people laying wrenches on the battery only to accidentally bump them into the electrodes.

I got it started!! It was one of the three things I put on but the alternator was still good because it was charging like crazy. I got a new voltage reg. a ballast resistor and a new electronic ignition control box an orange one. One of those three this must have gotten fried.

Good news , glad you got it going again without breaking the bank. If it was me and I replaced a bunch of parts ,it would always be the $2.00 part that fixed it after I spent $50.00 on parts that didn`t. Lol!

Yep every thing was pretty cheap.....wew. Good old V8 cars from the 60s. I remember the fuel pump was 34 dollars :)

The battery could have exploded so count your blassings.
Just yesterday the news showed a nice brick home burnt to the ground and the fire was caused by jump starting in a basement / garage.

i was putting my speedo cable in and it got crossed on my BRAND new battery i was under the dash hooking it up, felt it getting warm by the time i got under the hood it was glowing and out of habbit i just grapbbed and ripped the cable off the battery, it was too late it went through the top of my new battery and three of my fingers. my fingers healed but i had to buy a new battery and speedo cable. LIVE AND LEARN!!

I did the wrench thing before. Scared the crap out of me. I've never hooked up a battery backwards before though. That sucks. It seems like it would be easy to do. Good luck to ya, hopefully you didn't fry too many things under there.

No backwards battery installation but I have done the wrench/ratchet thing multiple times. Now I have a fender cover I just throw over the battery before I even start screwing around.

Not as stupid as my ex father-in-law! Years ago he dropped by to visit and when he went to leave his car wouldn't start. My 'ex' had previously told me her dad used to own a gas station so I didn't question him when he went to jump his battery off one of the dual batteries in my old '77 Ford (didn't know any better then - got a Ram 2500 V10 now) pickup.
Well, he hooked the cables up backwards. It sparked the hydrogen gas and blew the battery apart leaking battery acid down the inner fenders.
The clown said 'oops', connected the cables right to the other battery, started his car, then said 'thanks' and drove away leaving me with my jaw on the pavement. Never even offered to pay for the blown-up battery!
Oh well, he's gone now. Hope he's still searching for a jump-start wherever he ended up!

battery tool tray no work so good, making many spark and bright light.i think all of us have done that. gladly it no burn to ground.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has gotten the crap scared out of them by a battery. I was putting a new battery in the rampage this past summer and I looked away for a sec and accidental layed the wrench sideways, not only did it scare the crap outa me but I ended up throwing the wrench accross the garage. Never gunna do that again!!! Sure did get my heart beating...

ive seen kids at my school start to weld with perfectly good snap-on wrenches. anything that might have been avoided by not screwin around in class would have prevented all the stupid mistakes done in shop. i could start a thread in the entertainment section and go for days on what stupid stuff these kids do.
