Well I got my scamp the other day and the body is a bit rough. The paint is chipping really bad. I wanna do something the body since this car will most likely sit out side for awhile. I dont want more rust than I have. I thought about sanding it all down and maybe a primer. But I was told that was a bad Idea. Because primer obsorbes mositure. Is there a sealer or someting I can used to protect it? So my question is what should I do. I want to protect what good metal I have. But at the same time Im not ready for a full on body and paint project. I put in a few photos so you can get an idea what im talking about

If your just storing and not starting just spray bomb rust converter wait 24 hours and follow up with any rustolium! You'll just cut it out later and it will slow things down as far as rust.
Last fall I shot the teal and white 64 you see on the right just to seal up body work etc for winter. Painted in my driveway and still haven't hit with a buffer or wax yet. Getting ready to start on body work again and will reshoot again in fall. I' ve been known to shoot any color from a spray can to seal up outdoor body work for overnight. We get alot of moisture at night where we live.

I would stay away from almost any 'bomb can' primer, it doesn't lay don't much product, and typically has to be stripped in order to apply a 2k component over it(stuff with hardener) IF its bare metal i would apply an epoxy primer(2k no bomb can), works great for metal adheasion, when you it comes time to apply filler, you can just scuff the epoxy and put it right over it, w/o any problems, assuming the epoxy had a good clean surface to bond to.

I wouldn't be leaving it outside with constant rain pouring over it for many years, but its probably the best stuff for what your trying to do.

typical spray cans are lacquer paint, dries by air not another product(some is enamel though), sometimes when you spray a 2k product over it, it will lift, which looks like lil cracks in the stuff you just sprayed over it, next is to sand it off and try it again, or just sand it all off completely.

Just a thought, good luck 8)

Thanks for the reply guys. Im not sure when I will get to body work. I really need to get the floors patched first and some other stuff. My whole Idea is to try to protect what good metal I have from the elements of nature.

Go get a gallon of OSPHO(phosphoric acid) at your local paint and body supply store and brush on any rusted or bare metal areas. This will stop the bleeding untill you can continue. Take care when using this stuff....it is acid.

I bought a 68 notchback nearly 13 years ago. Drove it home and parked it below and paralell a 2 story house wall facing south. I purchased 4 scaffold stands about 24 inches tall and welded 5 inch sqaure channel iron on their tops. The car sat there for 12 years and is no more rusted today than it was then. I did spray a little rustoleum on the roof after the vynil top left in hundreds of little pieces. Sprayed a little on the hood too where paint washed away and surface rust appeared. An automobile is designed with rain gutters and such to prevent standing water on the outside. Standing water on the inside and underneath are the enemies.
You'll need to remove all the soft absorbent stuff like seats, carpet, and insulation.Crawl under and knock out every body plug you see.
"High and dry" so they say. High is dry or atleast dryer. Leave it lay in the yard on 4 flat tires and it will rot away. Hope this helps.

Working section by section...Use Non toxic paint stripper, get it as clean as ya can. Then Sand with 60-80 Grit on Dual Action 6" Air Sander. Then you spray it with an Epoxy Primer. Once sprayed with the Epoxy it sealed for life. And you wont have to redo your work a second time.

what i would do give it a scuff and put rust stoper or rust killer/preventer and like the 1 guy said put the rustoleum paint and it should be good for awhile NO PRIMER OLNY lol bad idea good luck
