Long Island NY - again!
am working towards putting a 360 into my '65 dart 270 droptop.
it is a v8 car, so the swap should be fairly routine.

HOWEVER -
the 360 i managed to get my hands on has a Edelbrock RPM air gap intake with a 1" spacer.

is this going to fit under my stock hood or is it going to be too tall?

it fit under the hood of a '71 duster for the guy i bought it from, but i suspect the engine bay is bigger on a later a body.

any help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

thanks alot FABO.

On my 64 Barracuda, which should be similar to your car, I had an Offenhauser single plane high rise manifold. I ran it with both an AFB & a Holley 3310. Used an air cleaner on it that was 14" in diameter with no drop base. Total height of the air cleaner was probably at least 3". I had a slight amount of contact between the edge of the air cleaner top & the lower part of the side of one of the braces on the underside of the hood. Never a problem, just made a little shiny spot there. I think you should be fine with any sort of drop base air cleaner. If necessary, I could measure the height of the Offy manifold I used so you could compare it to your RPM Air Gap manifold.

I'm running an rpm airgap on my 63 dart with no hood clearance issues. Just get the air cleaner with a dropped base and you should be fine. You may have to get rid of the spacer though.

thanks for the quick replies, guys.

Mr. 64Cuda -
no need to measure the intake.
i am nowhere near my intake to take a measurement on my side to compare. engine is in a shop about 25 miles from here...

i will get a dropped base air cleaner as you guys have advised.
is there one which you recommend, Mr. Dartman?

i expected to get rid of the spacer, so that is not an issue. the engine is going to have plenty of ooomph no matter how we set it up.

I haven't compared the height, but I run a LD340 with a Carter AFB carb, a 14" Moroso chrome housing and a 3" air filter under the hood of my 66 with no clearance problems.
To do the 360 swap you can use the original 273 motor mounts, but on the left (drivers) side, you'll need to add a 1/4" spacer or a couple of washers to make up the difference in lug spacing on the 360.
You will also need a center sump car type oil pan to fit that early A. You already have the V8 drag link, so you're good there.
If you're using a 904 tranny, it will fit with no clearance problems. If you use a 727 tranny, you'll need to pound back the pinchweld at the bottom of the firewall for clearance. Your 65 tranny should have a ball and trunion front connection to the tranny (904), so it might be a good idea to look for a tranny built after 1966 to get away from that connection, as well as a different converter input shaft on the earlier trannys. Also, you'll need either a torque converted with the 360 balancing weights attached, or a B & M balanced flexplate for you choice of trannys.
The later 360's use a different timing cover and water pump housing than the earlier 273's, so if you use the 360 parts the hoses will be on the wrong side compared to your radiator. I just used the 273 parts and everything just bolted right up, and the timing marks are visible in the correct position.
If you need a photo of how the driver's side engine mount goes on the 360, let me know and I'll post a pic.
Good luck.

904 tranny is in the car. good thing i guess...

i just ordered the flexplate and brand new engine mounts. so that's covered.

am fortunate that the old ball and trunion was switched out before i came into possession of the Dart. it has a new style driveshaft. one less thing to worry about.

we will be sure to keep around the old 273 to cannibalize for the timing cover and other items so that it all hooks up right.

i think the only issue may be the converter input shaft, but my mechanic says that we will fabricate something to solve the problem.

thanks for the quick and thorough replies, guys.

we will be posting pictures of the project when it gets going.

One of the FABO veterans told me about the Proform 66808 air cleaner base for a 2-1/4" drop. That should allow you to keep the 1" spacer with the AG intake to compensate for the bottom end of the rated range (1500-6500).

To stir the pot a bit more for my own selfish purposes, can anyone share any anecdotes about 4-hole vs open spacers w.r.t. bottom end performance? Open is usually suggested for top end power, right?

Also, has anyone ever compared 1" spacers to 2" spacers enough to share their experiences? (The Proform 66808 will allow for a 2" spacer under my hood with the short 3.5" Edelbrock carbs and the 5.35" AG intake.) Just fishing...
