From the factory some had banana grooves and some didn't. Post a want ad if you want for shafts/rockers, should set you back around $200 for used.

it could also be the difference in casting quality from the 70's and now....I've seen some of those cast adapters crack when torqued to spec onto the car....either way, a billet one will be significantly stronger than a cast one, and the billet ones are less expensive to boot

Back would help but I'm not sure about down. Seems like that would swing the engine forward right into the coupler. My vote is for up and it would swing away from it. Or sideways toward the passenger side, even better.
