just start with the diagram, see which devices(loads) are on that wire. disconnect all the loads. put each load back on the circuit until your fuse blows. then you can pinpoint which part of the circuit is the culprit. just repaired an alfa for a friend. isolated everything at the fuse...

i would pull the wire off sending unit and take voltage reading to ground. if voltage is present, it is sending unit and they differ in resistance if generic is used.you can also short that wire to ground quickly gauge should jump. if no voltage check at block in fire wall for bad connection...
