Which company for narrowing a 29 spline 8 1/4 rear end

I pulled a 8.25 sure grip 3.92 geared 29 spline rear end from a 2001 Durango R/T 4x4. It'll be going under my 400hp 74 Duster. Has anyone done this type of conversion before and what shops East of the Mississippi are best for narrowing the rear end and axles?

What rear end gears for 904?

A trans cooler was put on the car years ago when I built it. The car is built to run.

What rear end gears for 904?

I'll see how the car runs with the 3.92s before I go for nitrous. If it doesn't run right for me I'll go with a 3.55. Pull a Part here is full of 3.55 rear ends under Dakotas and Jeep Libertys. I may not need nitrous after all.

What rear end gears for 904?

Well, I'm going with 3.92 gears. I pulled a 3.92 sure grip rear end out of an '01 Durango 5.9 R/T from Pull a Part for $128. It's a 29 spline 8.25 that's not leaking and looks pretty clean. Sure, I'll have to have it narrowed, but after an LPW cover and extra strength alloy axles, it should...

What rear end gears for 904?

Okay, I see why everyone is recommending the lower gears. Thanks for everyone's input.

What rear end gears for 904?

The engine and trans are already built and it's unlikely that I'll be going back inside of either one of them unless something breaks. As far as the engine, the cam manufacturers recommend specific gear ratios from 3.55 up through 3.91 if I remember correctly. The nitrous is being added...

What rear end gears for 904?

Have either of you ran nitrous on 3.73, 3.91,or 4.11 geared cars? From what I've researched, higher gears (in this case 3.55) do better with nitrous, than really low gears.

What rear end gears for 904?

I'm at odds with what rear end gear to run in my Duster. The engine is a 360 with a 268XE cam with aluminum eddy RPM heads, aluminum RPM intake, 750 Holley Double Pumper, and produces about 400hp on the motor. Rear end is a built 8 1/4. A 100 shot of NOS is also in the plan. The trans is a...

B-body rear in an A-body anyone?

I'm thinking that 4 1/2 " of back spacing may do it for me but I'll mount an actual weel to make sure.

B-body rear in an A-body anyone?

Mopardude318 I'll conatct you if I run into any problems. I should be getting started on it in a couple of weeks. What size backspacing did you use? I'm planning on using Cragar S/S Wheels. I think that the guy in the article used a 7" wheel with 255/60/15 tires

    8 3/4 rebuild costs....

I'm trying to shoot for a much lower price as I assemble my rear end. I figure that it shouldn't be that hard if I get the green bearings installed. I SHOULD just be able to bolt everything up being that I have the housing, the axles, the third member, backing plates, and brakes. We'll see how...

Got a question about a 489 suregrip that I just picked up.

I think that I'm going to go the green bearing route also. I'll see if I can find someone around the atlanta area to install them but if not, I'll send them to Moser.

Complete drivetrain upgrade -904 mated to an 8 3/4 rear end

My current drive train is the standard 904 trans and 8 1/4 rear end. I think that a 7290 yoke will match everything up.

B-body rear in an A-body anyone?

As I undergo my 8 3/4 axle swap I wanted to check and see if anybody has ever put a 62-70 b-body axle under an a-body (i.e duster /dart/demon)? I found an article online where a guy moved the spring perches in 1/2" on both sides (to get the 43" a-body axle spacing) and bolted on a set of...

Complete drivetrain upgrade -904 mated to an 8 3/4 rear end

Okay, I'm about to swap out my entire drivetrain to a more beefier drivetrain and wanted some advice from someone who has done this before. I'm mating a built 904 trans to an 8 3/4 rear end. My question is, what do I need to connect the driveshaft to the 741 chunk? I know that there are...

    8 1/4 rear end strength

I'm sure that there are but I'd hate to have my axles looking like the guy's above. I'd rather spend little more money to build an 8 3/4 now rather than spend the money to build the 8 1/4 and break it and have to spend more money to build a 8 3/4 later.

    8 1/4 rear end strength

You know, I thought about beefing up the 8 1/4 but since I have the housing, complete 11" brakes, and 3.55 sg chunk, I may as well go ahead and buy a $215 set of a-body axles from moser and put it all together. I'll need to shorten the housing a bit and move my spring perches some but...

    8 1/4 rear end strength

I've read that the 81/4 was used in some performance applications but "performance" back in those days probably meant "mild" performance. I'm going to go ahead and build the 8 3/4 and have piece of mind that I'm safe. Thanks for the pics pettybludart and everyone's information.

yikes!! I may be better off forking the money out for a good a-body 8 3/4 rear end build

    8 1/4 rear end strength

I have a question for those of you who run an 8 1/4 rear end. How strong is the 8 1/4 rear when it comes to hot street/ occassional strip use? I know that 8 3/4's are what most people prefer but since the 8 1/4 is already under my duster, I'm thinking that it may be best and cheaper to just...

    **housing ends and axles etc**

Yeah, I second the motion for Moser engineering. I sent a set of c-nody axles to them to be cut and resplined for my duster. Plus they narrowed the housing one inch on each side for me. Fast turn around service too.
