All double rollers are not created equal

For oldmanmopar, I apologize I made a remark that I regret. No I am not happy that a roller on a lifter failed, but I bet you can't prove that the tensioner caused it either. I did not dispute anything you had said up to that post. I just posted my observation and experience.

All double rollers are not created equal

My 408 on a 5.9L engine was built w the double roller chain and a mopar tensioner. I did a refresh after a lifter failure wiped the cam 10 years later. Cleaned up everything and reused the roller chain and tensioner. Almost no wear on the tensioner pad, just polished. Plus I like the bracket for...

    No Decent A Bodies

Mecum has auction in Kansas City. Look at lot list and pick car. If it sells early in week, cars can be bought reasonable.

Would this be a bad idea?

The suggestion to put straight edge on valve tips is good from Rat B. Sometimes a bad valve job can cause sunken valves and uneven tips. There are valve lash caps that could take up some slack, but I have never tried them. If you find some 273 style adjustable rockers, you could then adjust...

    Lifter question

One thing that Hughes Engines recommends is to rotate cam with a speed handle on cam center bolt. See if all the lifters rotate, if they all do probably good to go. One of those lifters looks like it has vertical scuff marks.

    Tell me why not?

First of what is condition of short block. Do a compression test and report psi here. If compression is really low, new heads won't help much.

    Blown Head Gasket

After some comments about retorquing, I put torque wrench on bolts after sitting overnight & before start. No movement at all. Start up went good, and ran good at track. Thanks for comments.

    Blown Head Gasket

Had an unpleasant surprise a week ago. Checked the Duster 408 over to prep for drag races coming up. Checked the oil and it was way over full. Then checked radiator and it was below cores. OH OH, knew I had a problem. I had run it at drag races 2 weeks before and ran fine; just unloaded...

Top End Not Getting Oil (360 LA)

Turn the crank by socket & handle so don't shear skewer off. If must use starter, use remote starter button to have good control.

    I called it!

Besides when are the vehicles recharged? In evening after work when sun isn't shining. So good old fossil fuels will be recharging them.

    Time to Fix It Right

Get/rent guage that screws into plug threads. The pressure should build with 2 or 3 compressions.

Stock Rocker arms clearances and fit

There should not be any clearance or free play on rockers. When rocker assy bolts are tightened the rockers should preload the hyd lifters. Do you have any shims under rocker shafts. Or you have wrong length on pushrods.

Scat stroker crank main bearing question xtra clearance bearings?

Check out King bearings. I had one bearing bore on my 340 that was 0.001 tight. Too much work to clean up after honing that one bore. King had bearing that had .001 extra clearance. I had to buy a whole set for that one bearing pair. I am assuming you have 360, but if you have a 340 size main I...

    Compression Stroke after verifying TDC

I just hook up a compression tester to #1 cyl. Then you can turn crank w bar and check guage when get to your mark. I noticed that you have adjustable rockers. If you can rotate push rods then you don't have any preload. Is that what you want?

    Bent Push Rods

I don't know 360's well. Do they come OEM with roller timing chain? If not may indicate a good quality rebuild.

    340 installation

It helps to have a low dolly under car to catch the end of trans. This will make it slide easy & protect shaft and seal. As said before have front end of car high. I always do mine as assembly of both.

    intake gasket questions

Drain the radiator at bottom, just sucking coolant from therostat will leave some in there. Sealant on intake bolts is good idea. Inspect bolts, if not stretched should be ok.

    What's under this plate?

What's under there now is a bunch of caked & flakey carbon from baked oil. There is good chance that some of those flakes fall out into oil & lifters. It was originally to prevent oil splash from heating manifold. I was planning to reuse manifold by taking off plate and cleaning it. Instead I...

340 seems to be locked up

The correct bolts for convertor have thin heads for clearance. Also did you get all 4 bolts tightened & retightened. I got locked by that once. Tightened 3 bolts too much & 4th was sticking out then locked it.

    LA Oil Pan on Magnum

I have 5.9L Magnum engine in my Duster that has LA oil pan. When I rebuilt the engine, I used the one piece OS34409R gasket with the end pan seals attached. It developed oil leak at front of pan. When I took pan off, I found source of leak. I never noticed the gap at corner during assembly...

Reseal & gasket on 5.9L pan

Update: Pulled the pan with engine in the mounts. Pan would not clear TTI headers even when bolts loosened, had to pull out R torsion bar to spread headers. When dropped the center drag link, then had room to remove pan. I used the magnum style pan gasket and the rear pan seal has to fit in...
