Good point here. I would check that first. Still doesn't explain the bang, though, unless the bang was a result of running out of oil, which would not be good at all.

I hope it's nothing major, but sounds like it could be if the oil is gone, unless it just hadn't had time to drain back down yet when you checked it.

If you disconnect it from the steering box, you'll be able the drop the steering wheel all the way into the seat. Column shift probably won't drop that far, but should give you enough.
