Not long ago I posted a thread with a head that was angle cut so much that it caused a stir. After looking further I found two pistons with scarring from hitting the valve. I removed the pistons and found tiny cracks in them.
I've since ordered RHS heads, with valves, pushrods, rockers and...
Here's a video of these heads when the car was running. I'm guessing the "hole in the head" was even there at time. Notice the white smoke from the exhaust though. It wasn't that cold that day.

Sorry, I didn't answer this part... The engine seemed to be running okay. My biggest mistake was not running a compression check before putting it in the car. It took me weeks to get it running half decent in the garage. The whole time I noticed white smoke at the exhaust. It was winter and very...
Passenger side under number 2 plug. I think it's brass. I wouldn't know what a freeze plug in bad condition looks like :-). I'm not an engine guy so I don't know about proper installation. What are you thinking?
Thanks guys, I'm still concerned about the freeze plug and why it popped. I guess at this time I'm hoping it had something to do with the head. So what about if I put a tack weld on the freeze plugs to hold them in? Are they really even needed these days?
Thanks Cudafever. Already ordered the new heads and will be installing the Comp Cam. I've learned more about heads this week then in my last 58 years. I'll put these J heads in the trunk for better traction (minus all the milling). :-))))
Cudafever - The receipt I have is from Fox Engine Service in Jacksonville, Fl. It reads " Angle mill heads & correct bolt holes etc., 3 angle on seats; back cut valves, exhaust guides" totaled $312. I bought the motor on Ebay from a guy in Florida. He said he had cancer and needed to sell. He...
Good call Cudafever. I found the machine receipt and the heads were "angle milled"
Here is another pic of the head. Sorry about the quality taken with a phone.
My J heads are done. Now what to replace them with. Does a 73 340 .030 over have the compression for the Eddy 779? Someone suggested otherwise. Here's a picture of the pistons, I don't know anything about them.
Thanks all. I chose what I think is the milder of the two cams because the 340 is a 73 with lower compression. Purple or Comp brands don't matter to me, I just want a strong running engine that'll idle decently in traffic. If either cam would do that I'd probably just leave the purple in. Still...
Thanks for all your comments. Here's my plan and I'd really appreciate your feedback. I'm not trying to save money or waist it either.
1. Buy a dial indicator and make sure the top of the piston is below the blocks deck.
2. If so, buy Eddy 60779 heads, closed chamber, if piston is above...
Okay thanks all. This is the excuse I needed to buy new heads. Now considering the Edelbrock 60779 or 60719. Trying to figure out the whole open verses closed chamber thing. Yes, I'm a novice to all this.
The heads were worked by the previous owner. 3 angle, new springs, valves, retainers etc. He didn't say anything about them being milled (maybe for a good reason). He's not around anymore to ask.
Appreciate your thoughts Tony. This will be primarily street but I don't want a wimpy 340 either. These days my time is more valuable than money (I don't have enough of either) but if I thought the Indy or Eddy performance heads would help this situation I'd invest. Of course it's my haste that...
Thanks for the response and correction to the valve sizes. A727 tranny, sure grip 742 case 3.55, disc brakes front, drum back, no booster. I've also considered going with big valve heads but that would not help the compression, right?
The engine below is out of the car and heads are off. Reading through many posts on A bodies I'm feeling that the cam is too much. I'm trying to decide if I should replace the 474/284 cam before putting the engine back together. Any thoughts? I'm a purely a novice when it comes to these engines...
