When to change the oil after rebuild

Thanks. Any recommendations on oil weight? I think the service manual just says 10w30, 10w40, or 20w50.

When to change the oil after rebuild

My 318 was rebuilt about four months ago. When should the oil and filter be changed? There is around 50 miles on it. Any special type of oil needed? Thanks

    Hard starting when cold

As far as the fuel spray. Shouldn't it be more like a spray/mist? When I had the engine off, I gave it a throttle stroke and it looked like 2 streams dumping down the carb.

    Hard starting when cold

I don't know if it has ever been rebuilt. I haven't checked the bowls after it sits. I'm not too familiar with carbs but didn't want to open it up until I have new gaskets or have the carb rebuilt.

    Hard starting when cold

Thanks for the suggestions. 67Dart - I just let the car sit for about a week and pulled the air cleaner off. Before I tried to start it, I held open the choke, looked down the carb, gave the throttle a full stroke and saw nothing spray out. It was totally dry in there. I gave the throttle...

I'm gonna check how the carb sprays when it is cold before I start it.

    Hard starting when cold

I drive it on the weekends, so it can sit for about a week. But, it still did this after sitting overnight. I've started this thing good before. Yeah, when it doesn't start, I will usually just let off the gas pedal because I don't want to flood it from pumping it more than a couple times or...

    Hard starting when cold

Thanks everyone. Will try these things. What's weird is that when I crank it a ton of times, it doesn't choke or attempt to start. Just keeps turning over. Then all of the sudden it fires up and runs good. Doesn't want to stall or anything. If the timing is too retarded can this make...

    Hard starting when cold

Just checked the timing again and put the trans in neutral and plugged the vacuum advance. It is still reading around 11 degrees BTDC. Is it supposed to be retarded during break in or should it be at 0 as the factory spec calls for? Can this be part of the reason it is hard to start while cold...

    Hard starting when cold

It's a 318 with a 2bbl It has the mechanical choke that moves with the manifold heat. I just adjusted it so that the choke butterfly is closed all the way when cold. It started a little better but still took a bit. I checked the timing while the motor was warm idling at about 750 - 800 in...

    Hard starting when cold

Had the motor and trans rebuilt recently. The distributor and wires are new. It is usually hard to start when cold now. I hold the starter for several seconds and nothing, then try it several more times and still nothing. Then, after a couple of minutes I will try again and it finally starts...

    Help on engine oil level

Yeah at first I thought they used a different dipstick, but after finding the 3rd photo above (before it was rebuilt), the stick looks the same but a couple inches lower or so than it is now. I think I will just drain out the QT I put in. They can drain and fill it with 4 or 5 since the filter...

    Help on engine oil level

Maybe they just filled it with the right amount of oil then and never checked the dipstick. The dipstick is pretty firmly in place and looks like they put a glob of silicone or sealer around the base. So these can be adjusted on how deep they go? What holds it in place then? I can tell...

    Help on engine oil level

I got my car back from the shop a few days ago. The engine and trans were rebuilt. I decided to take a look at the oil level and see how clean it is. Nothing shows up on the dipstick! The car has been sitting since saturday so the oil should be reading everything. I added a quart of 10w40 and...

    Question about leaks

My engine and trans were rebuilt. I noticed a couple drips of oil at the back of the engine. The transmission also has a couple from the tail shaft and I believe the speedo cable on the side. I know the car is like 40 years old. Should I still expect no leaking at all?

    explosions on my 318..

It can be timing, too rich, or even lean. Wiki says "Backfiring can occur in carbureted engines that are running lean where the air-fuel mixture has insufficient fuel and whenever the timing is too advanced. As the engine runs leaner or if there is less time for the fuel to burn in the...

    Synthetic oils

I use synthetic Royal Purple 5w20 in my Mustang. Seriously seems thinner than water, but that's what it calls for! For the Scamp, I put regular 20w50 oil in it. Pretty thick but works good. I don't think it has ever been rebuilt yet.

Best way to torque crank bolt

Not sure if it is the same for these cars, but on my other car, I put a long bolt through one of the holes on the balancer and wedged a bar against that and an accessory bracket to keep it from turning. The bolt may bend so make sure it isn't needed for anything else.

    Tips on checking compression

Ohh got it. What's a good way to hold that open since it has spring tension? Just by hand? Where would you connect the remote starter? Would the starter relay be the small rectangular box on the fender near the battery area? Thanks
