Silicone self-fusing tape will repair leaking early TF cables

On the early 727 and 904 automatics that had "wet" pushbutton shift cables and park lock cables (i.e., the cables will leak ATF if their rubber housing is cut, burnt or broken), a leaking rubber cable housing can be nicely repaired with silicone self-fusing "amalgamating" tape such as "Rescue...

Need foolproof method of adjusting axle pre-load on Dana 70

I had to replace an axle seal, and thought I followed the FSM procedure for setting the pre-load on this full-floater, but I think I got it too tight because now I've got a slight rubbing noise. Would anybody have an idiot-proof method of adjusting the axle pre-load? Or should I just try...

automatic (push button 727) front seal leak ?

rustytoolss, I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, and hope you don't mind if I sorta hijack your thread, but I've also got a cable-operated pushbutton 727 in my '62 Valiant (got rid of the original A904) that has been leaking from the park cable where it enters the side of the...

How to get rid of push button shift cables

Nope, it's got a 727, toolman, as well as an 8-3/4" Dana Power Lock positraction. I did have to enlarge the floorboard hump to accommodate the 727. I don't think anybody mentioned the possibility of installing a manual valve body. Wouldn't that get rid of the shift cable, and then I would...

How to get rid of push button shift cables

Boy, those shift cables on my Valiant with a push button Torqueflite 727 sure do get in the way of everything. I'd like to install headers, but I think it's impossible with the shift cables in the way. Would you guys please edumacate me on how to convert an early PB 727 to a floor shift? I...

Hitting the strip with a pushbutton 727

Thanks a lot for the edumacation and the tips, guys. They were extremely helpful, and I really appreciate it. I've got this thread printed out for permanent reference!

Roger, roger, Pish! I'll check into changing the governor weights. Thanks a lot.

Hitting the strip with a pushbutton 727

Dumb question about what the big boys do at the strip. Don't laugh. Be a good person and take pity instead. Backstory: '62 Valiant with a pretty hot 408 stabbed into it. The cam has about 246 degrees of duration at .050 and it's got cast iron, open-chamber "J" heads that have been ported...

How hard is it to change ratios in an 8-3/4"?

"You will probably be disappointed with the 2:76 one wheel wonder." Toolmanmike, I am sure you are correct as far as acceleration is concerned, but what if I were totally unconcerned about it? What if I only cared about gas mileage and low freeway cruising RPM? (After all, when I wanted...

How hard is it to change ratios in an 8-3/4"?

"totally different housing, innards do not exchange from dana to 8 3/4." Sabre67, what you say is correct insofar as the currently available parts are concerned, but long ago, before Chrysler adopted the clutch-actuated Sure Grip posi, Dana made a special posi diff (the "Power-Lock" or...

How hard is it to change ratios in an 8-3/4"?

Right now I have 3.73:1 Dana Power-Lock positraction innards, and man! does the engine ever rev high on the freeway! I had that ratio installed because I intended to go to the strip, but so far I haven't got the car sorted out well enough to do that, so I've been daily driving it. I'd like to...

I need to overhaul my '62 Valiant push button mechanism

My '62 Valiant push button mechanism works OK, but it's pretty squeaky and creaky, and I'd like to lube and inspect it and replace anything that is worn. Do you think this is something I can do myself, or is special knowledge, parts or tools necessary? Should I ask "Torqueflite Patty" Blais to...

Have you ever heard of D & P Torque Converters?

I called the owner of D & P and he was very nice. He explained to me why his converters are better than cheaper aftermarket ones. He uses all forged and hardened parts, and he builds it from scratch, not from a kit. But when I asked him if his 3,500-stall converter would be streetable, he was...

Have you ever heard of D & P Torque Converters?

I'd like to tell you about a conversation I had today with my transmission shop and get your opinion. This man has built me several really nice transmissions and differentials; he definitely knows what he is doing and has a nice, fully-equipped shop, and I have always been satisfied with his...

My pushbutton Torqueflite cables hang too low!

1962 Valiant more-door resto-rod with an LA 360 and a pushbutton Torqueflite 727. I would like to keep the pushbutton actuation rather than switching to floor-mounted shifter. Originally the car had a TF 904 and a slant six. I am using the original park and shift cables, which are way too...

Did any 727s have iron cases?

Dear Rob and Del: does looking at the attached pictures tell you anything? I always assumed it was an A-488, but other people have told me it is an A-727. Thanks again.

Did any 727s have iron cases?

I've always wondered if the transmission in my car is original or was assembled from mix-n-match parts. Basically it is a 727, but it has an iron case. I had always heard that all 727s had an alloy case and that only 488s had an iron case, but maybe that is incorrect. Can anybody set me...

Patched the early TF park lock cable with heatshrink

I'm sorry to report that the park lock cable is still leaking ATF. So I thought I'd buy a new park lock cable. A friend told me that Pat Blais, dba Pat Blais Transmisisons and T'Flite Patty, of Marysville, WA (a specialist in old TorqueFlites) had old NOS parts like that, so I wrote him. He...

    Is a Sure-Grip the same as a Dana Power-Lock?

Maybe you guys can answer this question for me. I've heard that the Sure-Grip used the Dana Power-Lock differential, but I've never been able to confirm it, and in order to avoid spreading incorrect information I just wanted to know for sure. 'Cuz if they were the same, hows come the Power...

Patched the early TF park lock cable with heatshrink

The heatshrink to use is NAPA part no. 727618: 1/2" diameter black Belden heatshrink. Half inch is the smallest tubing that will fit over the clamping area of the park lock cable.

    727 shift cable housing repair

Busted Knuckles wrote: "Am I missing something here? I am not sure what cable is being discussed." 727 shift cable housing repair

I believe there is always ATF in the shift cable, but normally you just don't realize it because it is fully sealed. That is what I was told by my friend at the transmission shop, and my experience with him is that he really knows his stuff. Looking at the factory service manual exploded...

    727 shift cable housing repair

:banghead: When I built my '62 Valiant V8 conversion, I screwed up: I ran the 727's shift cable too close to the exhaust, and it burned a hole in the outside rubber sleeve. Now ATF is leaking out of the cable onto the exhaust, making clouds of smoke. A friend of mine at a transmission shop...
