    Fender Tag decoding info?

Which fender tag code items denote the factory installed transmission/shifter and differential/gear ratio on a 1972 Duster? Or better yet, where does one find the fender tag decoder link? Thanks.

Can anyone here steer me to a link or provide the gear ratios for an A-833 trans?

    ***-End Dilemma

The other rear end is also Sure Grip, almost 4 revolutions to 1 so we're going with 3.91 as I originally suspected on that one. That's a lot of gear for a 4-speed.

    ***-End Dilemma

The one is definitely an 8-3/4 Sure Grip and 3.55 gears. One full rotation of the wheels is 3 and a half turns of the chunk. Both wheels turn in the same direction.

Rear end(s) are out of the car, but not opened up. I will check using this method tonight and post results here.

Pretty sure they are both Sure Grips. Is there an ID that confirms it?

    ***-End Dilemma

I'll get out in the garage tonight and give it a spin through. I should be able to tell if it's 3.55 or 3.23 visually. Any ID marks on the chunk OD that would identify what gears are actually inside?

    ***-End Dilemma

What other 8-3/4 rear end ratios were factory options in 1972? Trying to determine the gear ratio of Option #1. Definitely 3+

    ***-End Dilemma

Thanks for the quick response! Haven't gotten anywhere near to choosing tires yet. Looking to probably going fairly close to original stock size (Rallye wheels) but open to suggestions. Rubber is 40 years+ old so not planning on re-using what's on there now. I was born at night but not last...

    ***-End Dilemma

Hey, folks, building my '72 340 Duster and I have the option of using 2 differentials. First one is the one that came with this car, a '72 340 Duster with factory A-833 4 speed. Not sure of the gear ratio but definitely less than 3.91. It's an 8-3/4 diff. Option 2 is a 3.91, also an 8-3/4. This...

    Trans and rear end swaps

According to Brewer's Performance, they use the same member. "Transmission crossmember for 1973-76 A-body cars, original, reconditioned. Used on both automatic and 4-speed applications." LINK: http://brewersperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TC462

    Auto to manual swap

My kid's been trying to talk me out of my spare 4-speed to put on his '74 318 Duster. (He talked me out of my extra brake/clutch pedals already) My question is; will a manual trans retrofit on an auto trans crank without having the pilot bushing bore reamed oversize? According to the...

    Poor Little Cone Style

Good point, Rusty. And, with all the failures people are sharing on the 'net, how many of those are from cars with conversions to BB/RB/Hemis, that probably shouldn't have been subjected to that to begin with? The 8.75 was designed primarily for use with the LA motors, am I right?

    Cone VS Clutch?

Rusty, I don't know that there is anything wrong with either pumpkin, except the 3.55 has 100k on it and the 3.91 has 54k...plus was in an accident. I was gonna dial out the axle flanges and check for a bent axle.
  29. Captainkirk

    Poll-which rear end?

Well, now that I know the difference between a cone and clutch diff, I have to figure out if each is a cone. Pretty much positive the 3.55 is untouched from the factory, but the 3.91 is out of a Mr. Norm's car, so it's 'possible' that a clutch pumpkin might have been installed, though not...

    Cone VS Clutch?

True that. The 3.91 is sorta buried; I could 'un-bury' it, but then I'd be tripping over it until spring.
