    A 904 Year Identification

Not quite. Magnums didn't come out until 1992 for the 318 and 1993 for the 360's. The "Roller LA's" are 1989 - 1992 for the 360 and about 1987-88 to 1991 for 318's (one of the old books I've read mentioned Roller LA 318's as early as 1985, I have yet to confirm) The A999 I pulled out of the...

How the F do you get to the bell housing bolts?!

Yes, And once you lower the rear of the transmission go around to the rear portion of the trans and you should be able to see the top bolts. Also be careful with the distributor. The way I did it is I sat behind the transmission (after I jacked the car high enough and used non-Harbor Freight...

    42RH in 68 Dart advice/request

Yeah if the guy doesn't know the difference between an RH or RE series transmission, he shouldn't give any advice, let alone touch your car. lol There are some places that sells a solenoid for the lock-up portion of the transmission. A500 Lock-Up Overdrive Solenoid Also, If I'm not mistaken I...

    Anyone use this Converter?

I've used their 2000 stall and 3000 stall converters. I've had no issues so far. The 2000 stall I've used since 2015. The 3000 stall well, I only used for couple hundred miles, so I have yet to make a good review. Never dealt with their customer service. So hopefully that 3000 stall doesn't...

    904 tranny pan question

Yes! I second this. The added capacity and that drain bolt on the bottom are great bonuses as well. I used the steel one mentioned in the quote for my A999 tranny.

    904: should I switch to 727?

Not with a 408 Stroker pushing over 450 HP. I have a Mike McCoy here in Lehi, UT whose been building rearends and transmissions for over 30 years tell me the same thing, he told me about 350HP & below is what he calls "safe" for a stock sure-grip 8 1/4. Plus, I already have all the parts minus...

    904: should I switch to 727?

    Keep the 904. Even better if you can find a 999 or 998 from the late 70's to early 90's (Basically a beefed up 904 the 1980's version had wide-ratio 1st & 2nd gears, 2.74/1.54/1.0 vs. the normal 2.45/1.45/.1.0 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears) --A lot of the F, M & J platform cars in the late 70's & 80's...

    Can anyone help identify transmission?

I've used these guys in the past: A904 Rebuild Kit A998 A999 Automatic Transmission Master Overhaul Banner Box Set Torqueflite 6 I'm sure there are a little better deals out there if you're willing to do more searching.

    Can anyone help identify transmission?

    For example the full code on mine is: PK4505170 9937 9574. (9937 = about October 11, 1988, for the 89' model year) I believe it translated to: #4505170. 1989 Diplomat' A999 Lock-up, some 3.9 ltr vans/trucks.

    Can anyone help identify transmission?

Most definitely an A999. Mine is from a 1989 Dodge Diplomat that I found chucked into the back of an old panel van in a salvage yard. These are damned good transmissions. Stronger than the A904, then you got the 2.74/1.54 1st/2nd gears and then lock-up. Which reduces your RPM's by 150-200 when...

    Drive shaft length question

Should be about the same as the Duster with a A904/A833 trans and 8 3/4 rear. So roughly around 48.9 in. to just a titch under 49 in. Something like 48.95 inches. "However" that is just a baseline of what came out of the factory.

“Best” all around axle ratio: ~450hp w/ A904?

I currently have a modified A999 behind a 360 with 10.2 compression. For now I'm using a 8.25 rear with 3.21 gears. I go about 3000 rpm's at 73 mph (27 inch tires) I've gotten up to 17+ mpg's going to my in-laws in Louisville CO. (500+ miles) while keeping it at those speeds. I know your 904...

Rebuild 904 or swap for 727?

Personal experience: A built 904 will serve you well. I would stick with the 904 (A999's are even better if you can find them). I lucked out and found an A999 out of a old police cruiser (88' Diplomat) in the junkyard. Put in kolene steels, red eagle clutches and kevlar bands. I also converted...

    A500 rebuild. Removing lockup?

Nope she gets one, her damn Tahoe takes enough space as it is. I get the rest since I also have two motorcycles. Plus I need space for the next project:

    A500 rebuild. Removing lockup?

Yeah, sorry for not updating. Since the last post a lot has happened. I started a new job, retired from the National Guard, and moved into a new house which took a lot of energy as we were dealing with the crazy house market here in Utah. Too many buyers not enough houses so therefore everyone...

    A999 in a 70 Duster

Ok this is a couple months old, but here goes: I have a build that is very similar to yours. My goal is high performance daily driver. I have a 1991 roller 360 with 10.2 compression with Lunati voodoo roller cam, a tuned Street Demon 750. I have an A999 as well, but with the Lock-up totally...

What rear end gears for 904?

3.55 is good all around gear for highway cruising and "decent" street pick-up. My DD has a 3.21 with an A999 transmission, most likely with different 1st, 2nd gear ratios than yours. (2.74, 1.54 vs. 2.45, 1.45). My rear tires are only 26 inches (245/60R15) diameter. I can squeak the tires off...

    A500 rebuild. Removing lockup?

I'm currently tearing into the $200 A500 I got it's from a 92 2wd Dakota. So I've done the non-lockup mod before with the A999 I have now I'm planning on doing the same with the A500 now. The main reason is torque converter selections are junk for LU 26 splines. The highest stall I found is...

    The 8 1/4 thread

From research A-body 8 1/4 width (flange to flange) is about 51.4 inches or so. I think 8 3/4 was the same. XJ Cherokee axles are slightly wider by around 3 inches or so. And yes you will need to weld perches on. Some more info to help a little Jeep Cherokee Rear 8.25

    42RH / A-500 in a Duster with pictures.

    42RH / A-500 in a Duster with pictures.

So I've been looking at 26 spline Torque Converters for these trasnmissions. Since it has the lockup. (May or may not convert to non-LU). The stall rating selections for the 26 spline is extremely limited, all I can find is up to 2500. Is there any place I can get a stall rating higher than...

    42RH / A-500 in a Duster with pictures.

The funny thing is all the clutches and bands don't look burnt so far. But then again I haven't tore in the Overdrive section yet. Somethings burnt though, because i can smell it.

    gear ratios and torque

I currently have a 3.21 rear, with an A999 (wide ratio, non-lockup mod) and 26.5 inch rear tires, it's just about a dang near perfect all-around driver. I can easily squeal the 245/60 tires and she takes off pretty good. Then again I have a pretty built 360. I did experiment with 3.55's once...

    The 8 1/4 thread

Some more tidbits of info, here you go: Chrysler 8.25 vs Dana 35: What's The Difference? In that forum it mentions the Lockrite Lockers, they sell these for both the Dana 35 and 8.25's. If it were me I'd stick just getting the 8.25's and/or getting parts for one, as they're plentiful. As quoted...

    3.9 high-stall converter behind a 318?

fshd4it, Stay tuned, I just acquired an A500 from a 92 2WD Dakota that lost reverse. I'm in the process of tearing into it soon. Then I'll eventually swap it into my Duster with a hopped up 360. I currently have a Non-LU A999 (3.21 rear) in it now. (that I partially rebuilt and switched it to...

First off, Welcome to FABO! Second, as stated S6 and V8 have different bellhousings. Lastly... Good news is you have so many options, especially if you're bolting in a Smallblock V8. 8 1/4 diff with 2.45 gears

2200-2300 at 70mph would be awesome! Hopefully once I get to it, I'll rebuild that A500 OD trans I got and put in 3.55 rear gears (a lot of work for both). Then, I'll be cruising the highways like I had 2.45 gears! 3.55*0.69=2.45
  30. Cuprum-74

    8 1/4 diff with 2.45 gears

A good chunk of the RPM also depends on the overall size of the wheel/tire, namely the rear tire if they're the offset front/rear size. So I calculated the estimate (automatic trans slip included) with 245/60R15 (26.5 inch diameter tires) to be approximately around 2200-2300 RPM at 70 mph.
