I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota with a 360 out of an unknown motorhome, been looking for a good 2wd transmission. Finally got an A904 in need of rebuild, but I can't seem to figure out the year.

Identification #: PK2892072Y

Additionally, is there any torque converter recommendations? It will have a mild cam, ported heads, and upped compression. (Shooting for about 9.5-10.5:1)

What trans was in the Dakota ? 88-03 V-8's were Magnum's. Superior to the 360 they replaced.
Both were externally balanced so if you use that older 904 you will need a converter that is weighted.
Post 1970 transmissions are much better.

When I got it it already had the LA 360, think it was a 46RE but it was a 4x4 transmission (tail housing for transfer case). My thought process is, I want a fun truck, 4x4 not needed, I want something that'll run about a mid-low 13's in the quarter (even high 13's would be fine with me), and I want to take it to events like PowerTour or MoParty. I kinda just wanted the simplicity of the older transmission, plus it's 2WD which is a big goal of the project. Thinking maybe I can get a Torque converter for a Dart, or Charger or something? I feel like there has to be some option out there for a 360 LA, A904 combo...

If the 904 is properly built, it should do the trick for you, they are great transmissions for street and/or strip use. I have one in my bracket Demon, it was built by my former race partner and I run a 4800 stall converter with no problems. It has been behind a 408 stroker and will soon be behind a 416 stroker that is a copy of a Hensley Motor Sports stroker that dynoed 623HP at 6400 RPM.

Not quite.
Magnums didn't come out until 1992 for the 318 and 1993 for the 360's.

The "Roller LA's" are 1989 - 1992 for the 360 and about 1987-88 to 1991 for 318's (one of the old books I've read mentioned Roller LA 318's as early as 1985, I have yet to confirm)
The A999 I pulled out of the 1988 diplomat had a Roller LA 318 in it.
And the Roller cammed LA 360 came out of a 1991 Ramcharger.
Both now residing in my duster.
