Unless they were old and dirty or had continuity issues or if the car didn't run good with them before, then why bother with the expense and hassle of changing them? What would be the advantage to using one of these newer alternators versus an older one? The engine mounting would have to be custom built for sure. Lighter weight and better internals would be my guess, but could the factory wiring be adequate for it's output?

Personally, i like Rusty's idea of dumping the old acid in the dirt and flushing it out with clean water. You could probably fill a 5 gallon pail with the old stuff including the flushings and drive across town to dump it so you don't get caught dumping it near your home. I would go at midnight...

My advice is to get a FACTORY service manual for your car ASAP and use it to track down your problem. Don't buy one of the cheap knock offs like Clymer or Haynes, get a genuine factory one. You'll be using it lots in the future anyway, so it will be money well spent.
