Need Opinions - Rebuild 904 or Move to 727?

I have roughly the same combination that you're running. 408 making 400 h.p. with a Hughes 2500 converter & 3.55 gears. I'm running a home built 904 and it's just fine. As said above, there's no need for a 727. Ted

    3.55's 4.10's or 4.56's?

I'm running 3.55's with a 28" tall tire. 60 m.p.h. is right around 2900 rpm. Pretty nice for cruising and still fun in town. Ted

    Help Diagnosing 904 Issues

The fact is that H pipes aren't always in the same location from car to car. It's usually a compromise where they end up. That being said you may or may not be able to sneak your tranny out with it in place. On my car I'm unable to do that so I take the pipes and mufflers completely off the...

    Help Diagnosing 904 Issues

If you're referring to rebuilding your transmission don't be afraid. I just rebuilt my 904 last month. It was the first time I was ever inside a torqueflite and it was real easy. Take your time and a digital camera during disassembly is your friend. Ted

    Help Diagnosing 904 Issues

You might want to get yourself a copy of this book also. Yes it's all about 727's but most of the info crosses over to the 904. Plus there are great step by step instructions on installing the TransGo kit. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hpb-hp1399 Ted

Ticking Noise Coming From Transmission Driving Me Crazy

Ok first your 318 is a Small Block style engine. Actually I was hoping that you were going to say that it was a slant six. I was thinking that it could have been something as simple as the valves being out of adjustment. Ok then it's time to move on. I'm thinking that I have to agree with...

Ticking Noise Coming From Transmission Driving Me Crazy

Ok my thinking is totally different on this. From what you're saying it sounds like maybe it's something in the valve train. Is it at all possible that the noise that you're hearing is coming from the engine and not the transmission? Do you have an oil pressure gauge in the car? If so what...

Ticking Noise Coming From Transmission Driving Me Crazy

I just recently had a similar experience with a transmission noise. When does it make the noise? Does it do it in park, or any other gear? Does it ever go away? The problem that I had turned out to be a bad torque converter. Something let go inside. But it only made the noise in park. Try to...

    Trans vibration or no?

OK. Just to be clear, you have stated that the balancer appears to have spun because the timing marks do not line up any more. So even if this is not the cause of your vibration it has to be replaced!!! Do it before it really causes some damage. Who knows it just might fix your original problem...

    Trans vibration or no?

The first thing that I would do is remove the belts from the front of the engine and run it like that. You say it does it in park so this test should only take a minute of run time. That will eliminate anything up front like the fan, water pump ect. You also might want to take a look at the...

I'm building one right now for my Demon. It was out of an E-250 with full floating axles. The only difference that I see is the tube diameter is 3 1/8" because the wall thickness on the axle tubes is 1/4" thick. Ted

    Need a quick explanation

A spool is a part that replaces the posi unit. It has no moving parts and locks both axles together so the both spin at the same time. Most drag cars use them because they're lighter and there's less chance of breakage. Ted
