Craftsman 12 pc deep impact sockets

Good score, By any chance US made? I have a set of Taiwann made Craftsman Sockets that have served me well, but I 'm dubious of their Chinese tools. (Yes, I know that Taiwann is considered to be China by many, but in my experience tools stamped Taiwann tend to be of better quality than those...

    Best approach to buying tools?

If you are on a budget HF isn't horrible the quality has improved. You can pick up the basics cheap. That being said their pliers suck. Craftsman and Channelock are still US made and good quality. The problem with the imports is the steel still isn't tough so the jaws wear really fast. Screw...

    Crimping Tool

I notice a number of people extolling the virtues of soldering joints. I can tell you that there are in fact down sides to soldering connections. The most common ones is brittleness. As others have pointed out, they seen failures in soldered connections. As for the issue of corrosion. In a...

    Mig splatter....

    Are you using 75% Argon 25% CO2? or Straight CO2? 75% / 25% tends to splatter less.

    Mig splatter....

Is the backside of the material clean? When welding sheet metal if at all possible clean both sides of the material. Impurities from the backside of thin material can migrate into the weld introducing contamination. Hope this helps. Regards, Joe Dokes

Which Air Compressor should I buy?

For $40.00 it might be great. It's probably a 110 unit and will probably run an impact gun okay, and you'd be able to spray primer pretty well. Air files and die grinders are going to be a bit of a stretch though. A buddy of mine bought a 20 gallone 110v 2HP compressor 25 years ago just out...

Which Air Compressor should I buy?

There is NO WAY a 120 V unit will handle the demands of any serious air tools. Die grinders, dual action sanders, air files, air nibblers all draw a lot of air and REQUIRE at least a 5 HP 220v air compressor. A lot of 120v air compressors will claim some wild HP numbers but simply put at 120v...

what is the least expensive welder i can get away with ?

Get a 220v. Although some 110v welder will claim that they can weld up to 1/4" material, I am not convinced. For welding in cages and subframe connectors a 220v welder will insure that you get the penetration necessary for a sound weld. Lincoln, Hobart, or Miller are all excellent welders...

Buying a Tig Welder & Taking a Class**

I've seen a lot worse, assuming you've got adequate penetration those welds look quite good to me. Are they a stack of dimes laid on its side? Not quite, but I've seen beautiful welds fail, and crappy looking welds hold up. Regards, Joe Dokes

To Lift or Not to Lift

I think a pit is out, unfortunately garage height is limited to 13 feet. If your beginning to think, "Holly crap, your city is out of control!" I'd agree, not only do I have these codes to contend with but we also live in a "historic district" which basically means that 7 geriatrics get to...

To Lift or Not to Lift

Thanks for the replies, now I just need to figure out how to hide it from my wife. ;) I think I'll buy it, and tell her it's a structural component. Yeah, that'll work, it'll have too, or I'll end up living in the new garage. Regards, Joe Dokes

To Lift or Not to Lift

I am going to build a new garage this summer. City limits me to 700 Square feet so it will be 25X28. Would like it to be bigger, but you can't fight city hall, I am not going to go through the expense of asking for a variance. :( I am considering a two post lift, but am concerned about the...

Anyone modified roof trusses to fit a lift?

Trusses are engineered, thus any modifications need to done designed by a structural engineer. The bottom cord of a truss is a structural component that plays a critical role in the strength of the roof system. For example, you'll see a lot of people put plywood on the bottom cord of a truss...
