    Header shipping paint removal??

The better paint removers will have methylene chloride in them. Nasty stuff but it works.

    Burning oil

It was my belief that with bad valve seals you would get a ball of smoke at start up, and get worse over time with oil consumption going up also because of it. Eventually it would get so bad you could see the puff of blue smoke whenever you let off the gas.

    How bad?

from rumblefish I think it’ll be fine. It has oil, your food there. No coolent? Double check it didn’t make its way into the oil. Pull the dip stick and check for a milk shake or just straight oil. or open the oil cap and see what it looks there.

Are these reconditioned x heads ?

When I get a chance, I'll look at the numbers on the J heads on my late 70 340. That's a 10.25 CR engine.

Are these reconditioned x heads ?

Doubt X head only. Could be J,U,O. I did a search and came up with this using the 2531894 number. How accurate? Anybody's guess. Mopar Casting Numbers - MyMopar.com - Mopar Part Numners

    340 compression ratio

IF STOCK PISTONS, they will come up over the block. And stock CR on the early build 1971 340 is 10.25, where 1970 and earlier is 10.5? What I read somewhere...... My 340 is a late 1970, so I'm guessing it went into a 1971 car. Just guessing, when I get around to it I will find out for sure.

    Favorite assembly lube?

I used STP on a stock 318 late 70's. First build knowing nothing but a Chilton's. Must of gotten lucky cause no issues even after no start and discovering machine shop forgot the oil plug in back of block between motor and auto tranny. And oil all over ground. Probably what I'll use on 340 when...

WTF is this THING in our 340 ?!?!?!?
