The round blue piece is a signal flasher rotate it 90 degrees to seperate from where its held in place. The rusted rectangular bracket is for another flasher type, possibly 4 way flashers. The yellow piece,,, I'm clueless.

There are 2 different types of those nuts. Some are made for machine threads. Best/or first to come to mind in a-body example are on the back of gauges. Those are for #10-32 NF and will not cut threads. I don't know that the other type that will cut threads in a soft tapered post may be listed...

Just remove the 2 screws that hold the instrument in the housing. Then you can get a grip on that stem and screw the knob off.

There wasn't any special hardware for the screw at the turned down end of the pad. Just a sheet metal screw with 1/4 hex head. The 68 only may be different from all others there. Your hole looks too big for typical sheet metal screw without a flat washer.

Brighter is a truth. "better" is a matter of personal opinion.

Its the headlight switch that has a button to release knob and stem. Early wiper knobs had a small set screw. later wiper knobs just push on I never disconnect these switches. i remove bezel nuts and leave them laying in the dash.
