I would take your column apart and remove the old shifter shaft and get that out of the way. Now you can cut the outer tube close to the firewall and insert your new bearing.
One thing you can do to get some relief is raise the front end a little bit which will make your tie rods closer to parallel to the ground. Another aspect I forgot to mention is the tie rods pivoting at the same point as the lower control arm so they move together.
That is what I thought, the problem is by swapping the steering link from the rear (correct geometry) to the front make it way off. The simplest way to explain it is for you to take an imaginary line from the center of the rear end to the front ball joints. Your tie rod needs to intersect that...
You can use the parking brake cables from the original rear end. I like to use a longer ruber brake hose from the axle to the body as the original ones are not really long enough.
I did mine by welding in the original bolt holes before drilling the new ones and converted to Disc brakes at the same time. A car I bought years ago had them just redrilled, no problem.
Do what makes you feel most comfortable, it is your car.
I think if you move the Idler arm the same amount, you will have no problems. There is enough adjustment in the tie rods to make up for what you are doing. Let us know how it turns out. btw there is enough "slop" for you to loosen the plate that the steering column mounts to at the firewall to...
