Using compressed air to clean out fuel lines?

If you are using the same sending unit, check the pickup line also. I switched out an aftermarket sending unit that the previous owner had installed. They don't read correctly, so I installed an original unit and found the pickup tube plugged. Had to soak it and use a piece of wire to clear it...

    Aluminum Slant 6 engine

Exactly. You would need to run a narrow tire similar to what was factory on the car. In the late 60's, early 70's I ran a 700-13 tire on the front with about 50psi - not on long highway trips, but it helped with the manual steering and mileage. Not everybody's cup of tea, but rolling...

Do slant six swaps make you feel guilty?

Buddy of mine has a '65 Dart and has a line on a low mileage hipo 273. I've got first dibs on his low mileage 225. I plan on upgrading from my 170 to that 225.

    Setting timing on a 225??

I have a dist wrench from the 60's/70's that is specific to the slantys (7/16) and works on both adjusting bolts. I think you can still find them on e-bay and swap meets.

were spark plug wires the same for all slants

An old time dealership parts guy put me onto AC Delco 16-806A plug wires for the slant. I have had them on 3 different slant cars. Great fit at a good price. Downside - AC Delco printed on them. Can rub it off if needed.

    Oil filter "stand pipe" question

Your picture is the early pump which requires the tall filter. The newer version of the pump has a short threaded nipple about an inch long. Ebay has some of the newer pumps listed. You can look at them to see the difference.

what make model of carb for '64 slant 225

Bill, I just feel like I got lucky with my Holley. I just cannot believe how good it is. It can sit for a few days and fires right up without having to pump it. I was always a big fan of Carters, but this Holley has been the exception to the rule for me. I dread the day it craps out on me.

    Oil filter "stand pipe" question

I also read somewhere, Allpar I believe, that the newer slants won't fill up a tall filter and you should use the "shorty". I don't know how much truth to that. I still use the long ones on both.

what make model of carb for '64 slant 225

The Carters had a reputation for vacuum leaks at the throttle plate shaft. A rebushing job fixed that. The Holleys were known as a "cheap" replacement for the Carter. I currently have a Holley 1920 on my '64 and it starts and runs perfect.

    Oil filter "stand pipe" question

Member Crackedback has posted a Wix oil filter thread. The "standard" filter for a '74 motor would be the shorter filter Wix 51068 or a "16". If you have a longer stand pipe, either the motor has been changed out or a different oil pump has been installed. Earlier slants need the longer 1 quart...

BBL should be a Carter BBS (Ball & Ball Single). Carter's version of the Holley 1920.

    Gas tank replacement ????

1965 service manual states you can remove the filler neck without taking out the tank. Slide the tube into the tank, twist the tube 180 degrees so it is facing up and wrestle it up and out of the tank over the side of the fender.

Which do you prefer on a stock 170? Carter or Holley 1920?

I've tried both on my stock 170. Currently I am using a Holley 1920 with great success.

    Crate 225?

I stopped by Chuck Lofgren's shop in Cedar MN and inquired about a slant six build and he showed NO interest at all. He won the Mopar Muscle Magazine 2005 Hemi build off. He does build wicked Mopar V8's though.

    Crate 225?

Jasper & ATK sell "crate" slant six motors. I think NAPA, Summit and Classic Industries sell the ATK brand. Don't know the quality, problems or customer service with either.

    Why the /6

The "warm fuzzies" that guys have when they look under your hood. You see the looks and flood of memories that a slant will generate. That makes 'em cool to own.

    What oil is best?

Probably more important is using a quality oil filter - one with a anti drain back valve. Wix 51515 is my choice. 10w-30 with regular changes and slanty will stay happy. A ZDDP additive is also good insurance against lifter failure. Avoid synthetic unless it is driven all the time.

    Hot 170

Have you had the car very long? Is the a new problem? Easy way to check for a plugged radiator is pull off the lower hose, fill with water with hand over lower outlet, when full take your hand away. If it gushes out radiator is good, if slow and gurgles, it's plugged. Check the cap, and here's a...

what type of oil to use in a 225?

Even Rotella T and the other diesel oils have now started running reduced levels of zinc. Best to use an additive or the oils specifically made with increased levels of zinc. Better safe than sorry. Once Fram got bought out, the price and quality of their filters went downhill. As it was said...
