    Whats everyone running for gears?

In my '64 I run 3.27's in the 8.8. Keeps my RPM's low for long distance freeway use.

Trans out and have a few questions

How long does it take to rebuild one? My first one took two days. Day one I pulled it out, tore it down and cleaned it up. Day two was reassembly with the shift kit then reinstalling it. It honesly will depend though on how jacked up the trans. is. Any major parts broken and obviously then you...

    any 8.8 rear will do?

The basic breakdown to look for is any explorer 1991-2001 (95+ will be disc brakes). Only 2002+ would be IRS. On the tag bolted to the cover it will tell you the ratio and traction lock or not. On the left side of the tag it would say something like 3L73, meaning 3.73 gears with traction lock...

    any 8.8 rear will do?

Don't go the cobra route, use an Explorer.

    any 8.8 rear will do?

3.27 is the other one you're thinking of.

    any 8.8 rear will do?

I used a cut Explorer rear. It is only about $100-150 to have it cut and you get the 31 spline shafts where most all rangers are 28. Not to mention the shafts are larger diameter so they are stronger. Also most Rangers are not LSD where as many more Explorers where. Look for the "L" on the tag...

    Does trans fluid wear out

What trans. is it, the 518? Does it slip in all gears? Fliud smell burned? I know in some models they have a pressure switch and governor pressure solenoid that is a common issue.

What are the Pros and Cons on using mounting kits for tranny cooler & fan?

I would just go pick up some steel or aluminum strips and make my own mount that is mounted solid. I have seen a few of those work loose over time and rub throught the radiator tubes.

    727 yoke seal leak

I would think you probably just knocked the tension spring off the seal when you installed the yoke. I would pop a new seal in but before you do put a little petroleum jelly or trans. assy. gel around the tension spring. Sometimes they just catch and flip off the lip of the seal.

    Shift Kit or Not?

Even a completely stock vehicle would benefit from a shift kit in my opinion. It's not just for race applications and can also benefit the longevity of the transmission and its internal components.

should I change gears or tranny???

I would go cheaper and just gear it if the trans., etc. seems to be solid. Might be kinda difficult to find the ratio you want if doing the junkyard crawl since most D60's seem to come with the 4.?? gears for towing. New of course you have tons of options. The trans. would be the best overall...

    727 kickdown lever length

I had this issue when I set up the 904 in my '64. What I ended up figuring out was with the cable setup both the lever at the trans. and the carb. need to be the same center to center distance. The different length on the levers came from the factory rod setups having different pivot points. So...

    Trans go 2 shift kit

Oops. Well short of taking it apart yourself there really isn't any other way to know how he set it up. Its really not hard to take the VB apart yourself and even if you get lost there are plenty of folks on here to help you get it back together and the way you want. :-D

    Trans go 2 shift kit

The TF2 shift kit can be set up for different levels of shift firmness. If you leave the 1-2 ball out and don't drill the plate then you will get the firmest shift possible. If he left the ball in and drilled the plate you can adjust the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts depending on the size hole you drill in...

help. One last mod I need to do...transgo 2 shift kit...

I skipped that mod on the few I have done. When I read it and thought about I couldn't help but remember the time my buddy accidentally dumped my Charger in low when we where going down the freeway. The guy I bought the car from had the trans. built for race and it had the shift command. Can't...

    904 advice needed

I would do it myself and get the parts from somewhere like bulkpart.com or hughes. You can get a basic rebuild kit or build it up a bit more for any future add-ons with things like Red alto clutches, kolene steels, Trans-go shift kit, etc. Get a good service manual like the atsg one. I also got...

    help picking a shift kit...

TF1 or TF2 from trans go. Check out bulkpart.com. When you get the kit it has options for how firm you want the shifts. I would recommend you leave out the check ball for the 1-2 shift and don't drill the plate. See how you like the shifts and if its too firm then you can go back reinstall the...

    B&M super duty cable

Is the SD a thicker cable? Did you happen to see any difference how the inside cable attaches to the ends between the two?

    B&M super duty cable

That sucks. Mine snapped right at the crimped end at the trans. Everything installed perfect and only a few years old. Im pretty pissed the warranty doesn't cover the cable.

    B&M super duty cable

Thanks for the heads up. I have the basic Star Shifter and was hoping the SD cable would be a better bet.

    B&M super duty cable

Are these super duty shift cables any better than their standard ones? My stock one just snapped and I am hoping this one will do better. Anyone have experience with these? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80832/

    What grade to use

I would go with grade 8. Todays chinese grade 5 bolts are more like an old U.S. grade 1.
