How long does it take to rebuild a 904?

I have a PK3515873 early 1972 and a PK3681064 late 72-73 so...are they the same..use either one?

I got some good suggestions for books. Are any of them step by step? Anything on CD?

Thanks Craig

We go through this here every few months, LOL.

There are 19--20 videos here on Youtube

I don't know how with Internet Exploder, but if you get Firefox (free download) and then look for a plug-in/ add on called "Video download helper" you can save the vids to your hard drive

Bill Munroe's book: (actually about 727s, but much applies:

How long does it take to rebuild one? My first one took two days. Day one I pulled it out, tore it down and cleaned it up. Day two was reassembly with the shift kit then reinstalling it. It honesly will depend though on how jacked up the trans. is. Any major parts broken and obviously then you will have a wait on your hands.

I have the DVD from technical videos (#12-727) pretty good. For the 727 but the same basics for the 904.

Oh and some good specs I got from another member on here (Fishy68) that I always follow are--- set clutch packs (dry) to .012-.015 per disc (ie 4 discs x4, 3 discs x3, etc.) and set endplay to .010 to .020. The specs they allow for at the factory sucked.

Nothing to it. \\:D/ In 35 years of wrenching and I never touched an AT. I had this 904 disassembled and diagnosed in 1.5 hour. The direct clutch is toast and well worn. It also seems the re-builder forgot to put in a washer with tangs in the planet assembly. Got lucky it didn't scar it up. More questions for this stock build behind a mostly stock 318.

What about bushings...should I replace...how to tell if worn?

I'm thinking of a Transgo TF1 or B&M for crisper shifts. Stock shifting was OK but, thought I should put one in. Comment please.

Thanks for all the help from you trans guys!!!

I would have to recommend the Transgo TF2 (you won't be sorry)
All the links are great for beginning rebuilders.
As far as I know there is no real world way to tell if a bushing needs replaced, as I always replaced them.
There are two places to look for wear that a lot of the manuals and videos overlook.
1 is the input shaft to output shaft bushing about a 3/4 inch round bushing
2 is the side play and thrust washer condition of the planetary gear sets.

The reason the link wouldn't open for 67DART273 is because his operating system sucks.:D

Oh, and for Windows OS and Explorer there is a free program that you can download that will allow you to download nd save the video's called FreeFLV downloader.
