I'm not sure if you've even got any options on an intake, but I'm big on reworked Quadrajets, if that isn't delving too deep into "the dark side". Hey, Q-jets were originally designed and built by Carter.
When you do finally get it started , can you determine if it was flooded, by way it runs? (chugging/some black smoke) This will be able to tell you what's going on, to a certain extent. Maybe one of those carbs is overflowing or something similar.
I can't stand those little valve cover filters for that exact reason. Yet, you see them in so many engine bays. Crankcase pressure is the culprit of so many oil leaks.
I'll bet it's probably flooding out by percolating the fuel in the carb bowl. Next time you drive it on that 15 mile loop, before you try to restart it, yank off the air cleaner and peer down the top of the carb and see if it squirts fuel when you open the throttle by hand. If it's able to...
I've used starting fluid to spray around the base of the carb and intake manifold-to-cylinder head area. You might have blown out your carb base gasket or a hose blew off.
If it were mine, I would probably use the location of the factory convertible top switch!.....which would be off to the right of that flasher switch right there. Use the factory round bezel and chrome knob on the cable.
With the carb apart on a bench, you should be able to move that plunger up and down by hand (like I said, with some kind of liquid) and see where it's going. Either there's a bad seal between the plunger's leather seal and the wall of the pump well or it's being pumped back into the float bowl...
With the carb apart, you should be able to blow air (or some kind of liquid) from the bottom of the accelerator pump well (there's a hole at the bottom, right?) out the hole at the bottom and out to the sprayers near the venturis.
Sometimes (and I'm not familiar with this carb) the little...
Well, I would say that if you can turn the idle mixture screws in....like you said.....and make the engine die, then I don't see why you can't make it lean enough at idle. You can lean it out to the point that it's stalling! I think it may be that your cam is just lopey and inefficient at...
I've heard this before but is this true?.....I was thinking that the power valve can only have an effect on the mixture of the main circuit, not the idle circuit at all.
I'm on board with these thoughts. If you've got a big cam and low vacuum, it can be touchy and (in my opinion) may never "not" burn your eyes @ idle. Too big a carb?......no, it's all about the jetting and power valve and if you're actually on the idle circuit.
Sometimes, the check valves inside the pump will just get stuck closed. If you lightly blow some air through it from the "inlet" side, it'll unstick 'em.
Carburetor float bowls themselves hold enough fuel to start and run the car for at least 5-10 seconds, which is definitely long enough to get the mechanical fuel pump pumping gas up and into the carb.
If this check valve cures your problem, I'll be amazed.....I mean, I hope so but it makes...
I used to have flooding issues in hard turns with an old AFB I used to run. I don't know if that was inherent to that carb, or maybe my float level was too high. Anyone else have that problem? That's one thing I never had with my Holley.
Funny you mention that.....I was looking at these at Summit and they mention "square bore" AND "spreadbore". These sure look like repop Thermoquads, don't they? But only 625 CFM...? Has anyone seen these up close or have any knowledge of them...
Once Chrysler realized how much power they added, they surely weren't about to unleash THAT on the public......426 Hemi, yes.....open element air filter, absolutely not! :D
I dunno.....with that cam, I don't think you'll ever get it to run where it's not turning your garage into a gas chamber while it's idling. I would wanna know what the vacuum is.....that also will tell you what power valve you need, right?
I've been using this stuff and boiling water (it's super-concentrated, you don't need too much). It's only about $10/gallon at Harbor Freight and it kicks ***. The only thing is you need to rinse it off immediately with fresh water really well and blow the carb out good afterwards, otherwise...
