Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Correct, I already took that side off the Kmember and it fell out without even using a hammer. In fact, that's my own photo in post #22. I am asking about the opposite end where it is connected to the center link. Thank you.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Tha't's what I was thinking, but do you mean this works on both ends of the idler? Thank you.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Update: Neither my local bolt/nut fastener specialty store sells castle nuts and neither does local Auto Zone. In fact, I see the Centrix brand of idler arm (sold by Rock Auto) does not even use castle nuts and cotter pins anymore (according to the photo), just a "locking nut" alone. No thanks...

Factory Torsion Bar Diameter for '65 Formula S?

For reference, so far found 625 (.85) on our '65 Signet Convertible 273/auto and found 777 (.88) on our '72 Satellite Sebring Plus 318/auto

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Point taken, but I've had the Valiant for over 14 years now and never noticed slack in the steering until the last time out. Still weird.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

I found (hopefully correct) torque specs for idler arm stud nuts as follows: link 40 and bracket 45. I doubt there is room for a torque wrench in there, but I can guesstimate 45 by hand. Might give it a try tomorrow. Maybe a good idea to purchase new nuts beforehand.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Went to work removing the idler. At first, it looked like the nut for the end that was "loose/moving" in the K-frame was somewhat inaccessible. It was a little tricky removing the cotter pin there but after that task I found I could fit the box end of a 3/4" combination wrench over the top of...

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Drove the Valiant from its purchase point of Port Angelis (state of Washington) to La Paz, BCS, Mexico (with a stop of several years in California) without having had even a flat tire (2,250 miles). Since then, only an occaisonal 20 mile round trip to an annual local car show. However, during...

I found this handy chart (hope it's accurate).

Factory Torsion Bar Diameter for '65 Formula S?

I'll have to crawl under sometime and see if I can read any numbers imprinted on the end of the bars.

Factory Torsion Bar Diameter for '65 Formula S?

Forum member "grimreaper" posted this data on an old thread. I understand the '65 Barracuda Formula S had stiffer torsion bars than the standard Barracuda. I wonder which bars the Formula S was equipped with? My formula S with the 273 Commando has (had) factory A/C if that makes a difference...

    Factory sway bar color?

The '60's Valiants were better rallye cars than drag racers.

    Factory sway bar color?

I imagine factory sway bars were not painted (or if so, black). I had some left over John Deere green I used the first time. The second time I stepped things up to red (matching the Commando 273 engine paint now). I wanted to "feature" the sway bar, more so than hide it.

    Front end torque specs

Are the bolts/studs I am pointing at in the photo called "steering knuckle bolts"? (I would have called them "backing plate bolts"). Thank you. (trying to find torque specs-they are a bear to loosen after 50 years) This is a 1965 Valiant I am working on.

    Pack the Wheel Bearings Failure

Another episode today of "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back" I have been looking forward to premiering my Lisle 34550 wheel bearing packer for quite some time. Found an almost full can of stringy heavy duty grease and filled the Lisle about half full. Following directions to the letter, but no...

    Polyurethane or Rubber

It doesn't need to freeze to find potholes. Here in Baja California it has never dropped to freezing temperatures in all the history of weather data. However, when it rains, downtown paved roads are chuck full of potholes the following week. Maybe the fact there are no storm drains here...

    Shock Absorber Length Refresher Course

Well put together from Australia. However, I am not sure this applies to shocks mounted at an angle (which most are). I have not seen any vertically mounted rear shocks on Mopars. https://www.pedders.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/PED3415GTechstop16_03-Shock-Absorber-Length.pdf

The leaf was added to the stock springs by a local shop down the street. The leaf added rides right underneath the top leaf, the top leaf being the factory longest one.

Too Agressive With the Leaf Spring Rebuild?

The shop that I trusted to augment my leaf springs for the '65 Formula S went and put a full leaf on both sides. The new leaf looks like it may be a larger "caliber" than the factory used, at least on the ends where there is very little "bevel" (new leaf in photo #1 is second from the right, a...

When to Use O-Ring on P/S Pressure Hose?

This power steering pump was attached to the '65 Formula S when I purchased it and I have no idea if it is original to the vehicle or if it is a replacement from another year/model. Anyone expert enough to classify this hose fitting and tell us if it seals with/without an o-ring? Thank you.

Early A Body Sway Bar End Link Factory Torque Specs?

Re-installed the factory stabilizer bar on the '65 Formula S today. I read on the internet (which I take with a grain of salt) a general answer was to tighten the end links until the rubbers squeeze just enough to pass the diameter of the washers, maybe 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch. Then back in...

    Rear Leaf Spring Question ...

I added a full leaf (now have 7) to our '65 Formula S. Without the glass, motor, and transmission installed it is definitely not soft without the shocks. Getting worried it might be way too stiff on the road. For some reason the passenger side height is about 3/4" higher than driver's side right...

Found Blue Paint on My Black Torsion Bar ('65 Formula S)

Getting reading to repaint the torsion bars. After degreasing them I made two observations. #1) It appears the last time they were painted, the paint ran down to the bottom of the bar (gravity) because the paint is not smooth on the side that faces the ground. This could have been a factory...

I Wonder How It Will Handle/Ride?

Currently, the front suspension is up against the rubber stops with the engine/transmission not installed. I am...
