3.09 4 Speed Gear Set Strength

That's for sure. I had an A833 converted to a crash-box setup and before long it stripped all the teeth off third gear during a quarter-mile power shift with a built 273. Surprised the heck out of me at the time (I used both 3.09 and 2.66 first gears in the vehicle-the close ratio was better...

Shifting too far in 3rd gear....?

Just for your information, I have heard third gear is the weakest link in the A833 transmission. My personal experience is that I have blown third gear to bits power-shifting. I don't know why this may be a fact, not being a transmission builder.

    A833 Noise in Third

I blew an A833 power shifting on by bracket car (4-speed small block with 10" slicks). You guessed it, ripped all the teeth from third gear. I have read elsewhere that third gear is the weakest link in this transmission (don't know why).

    Speedo Gears

You might want to add a GPS speedometer to your smart phone and get some good numbers driving down on the highway (at different speeds) to determine how your GPS speed reads now (compared to the dash speedometer) to get an accurate baseline on how far off you are and go from there.

Do you paint your pressure plate housing?

My Kevko oil pan evidently is zinc-plated, a good rust preventative measure but I understand difficult to paint over. My new Autozone Duralast calipers look to have the same zinc finish. I am not used to seeing new items prepared like this, but I understand it is as cheap as paint.

Pistol out and round ball in?

When I converted my '65 Valiant to a four-speed, I used a pistol grip at first but found it difficult to power shift. Changed over to a Hurst T-handle twisted about 45 degrees to the right, which made consistent power shifting without missing a gear routine. Never used the ball handle. Here is...

4 spd. pops out of gear.

ABodies with performance clutches need a firewall brace to eliminate firewall flex. I used hollow tubing flattened on each end and bent at each end to accommodate a master cylinder stud and then a bolt hole drilled into the driver's side shock tower/inner fenderwell. In the foto, it is painted...

4 spd. pops out of gear.

Not directly related, but I have read somewhere that second gear is the weakest to be found in the Mopar four-speed. This supports my experience at the drag strip, having had stripped all the teeth off second gear during a power shift with ten-inch slicks. Second thoughts, maybe it was third...

1965 Barracuda Auto to Manual? Advice/Thoughts?

I took the four-speed from a '64 Barracuda and installed it in my '65 Valiant four-door. No problem with the swap. If you do this, I recommend highly installing a firewall brace to limit firewall flex when using a stiff performance pressure plate. I ran my brace from a lower bolt/stud of the...

    Giving Up?

Is the firewall flexing when you push in the clutch? I used a brace from the driver's side inside wheel well to the firewall (I think it was attached to one of the brake master cylinder bolts).

Slick shifted a833 on the street?

Could only downshift mine when at a complete stop, could only upshift mine at full throttle. No street driving for me under those conditions. Well, I guess I could have driven around all day in first gear, but not very practical with a 4.56 ring and pinion. P.S. This is what was known as a...

correct z bar for early a body SB 4spd

Original poster's Z-bar looks modified. I used a bar from a '64 Barracuda in my '65 Valiant 4-door and it fit alright except I had to trim the plastic bushing halves (don't remember the very minor clearance problem there). Whatever body holes needed were already stamped out of the four door to...

Anyone else use a crash box sometime?

Back in the 70's I had someone grind every other tooth (forget the name of that part) from the innards of a A833/3.09 low gear four speed. I was warned never to shift into second, third, or fourth except using a full power shift. Well, the return road from the end of the 1/4 mile drag strip...

    Pedal Help -

Sometimes the firewall can flex. With performance pressure plates, I always use a tubular brace from the brake cylinder area to the drivers side inner fender in order to always achieve full pedal action.

Is a pistol grip shifter a good choice for power shifting/drag racing?

I had a couple of questions regarding the terrifying (for me) process of full throttle power shifting: 1) Is the mopar factory-style pistol grip recommended for power shifts? 2) During a properly executed power shift, do engine rpms increase momentarily during those micro-seconds that the...
