    Not if it is a dual ballast resistor, you could have a good run side but a bad start side. could be switch, wiring/bulkhead connectors, or ballast.     I have a crimper made by Packard elec. div. G.M.C. P/N 12085270. Makes perfect "w" crimps, and will actually crush solid copper if you load to big of wire.

    If you use a single diode you use the current flowing one way and the current flowing the other is not used (not consumed), if you use a bridge rectifier ( 4 diodes ) the sine wave is folded back on itself and you get to use it all as DC.

    12 volts is a dead battery, fully charged it should be at least 12.6

    UGH!!! Starter Issue. HELP!

    Does the flywheel spin when the starter cranks? Could the flywheel have come loose from the crank? Did you use the correct flywheel bolts?

    Also check chassis ground! If you have no chassis ground, evrything will check out ok if you go to batt. ground for your tests but nothing will work.Try a jumper from batt. ground to a fender bolt for a test.
