Opinions on 4 speed with OD

I have a 340 with a iron 833od gearbox 3.55 LS 8 3/4 and 14 inch tires. And I hate it. first gear is too low second gear is too far from first and 4th gear is noisy. I am planning to swap back in a non OD 833, and maybe add a gear vender unit. The 833od were designed to be for fuel...

    ADDING A SURE GRIP

You should check the ratio of the gear, it is likely a highway gear and not something fun like 355. as for swapping out the pumpkin. it isn't that difficult and doesn't require any special tools. you do need to check to see if the U joint is the same size as what you have, but even if it...

Need help from a speedometer gear size expert!

You should check the accuracy with your odometer, because it is gear driven and not prone to becoming inaccurate over time like your speedometer is. If your Odometer is not off by the same percent then you probably need to replace it.

Need help from a speedometer gear size expert!

4 mph at what speed ? The way I do it is to find a mile marker and note your odometer. drive 10 miles and note your odometer. Divide the difference by 10 and multiply that number by the number of teeth. so if your odo says you drove 9 miles and your tooth count is 30 then you will...

    Dialing in speedometer

Whatever number you have in there times 80/60. But if you want to be more accurate. note your odometer when you pass a mile marker, drive 10 miles note your odo at the tenth marker. divide the difference by 10 and multiply that times the number on your current gear and that is the new gear...

    440 and 833OD

I am not sure they put an overdrive 833 behind any big block. you may need to get a scatter-shield bell for it. like this. Lakewood 15335: Blowproof Bellhousing 1959-1978 Chrysler 383/413/426/440 | JEGS

    440 and 833OD

Make sure it isnt the aluminum 833od there is a steel cased one made in 73 that is stronger. Also the bearing size in the front of the 833od is larger than the standard 833 you need an 833od big block bell housing. contact brewers for any needed 833 parts or information.

    Speedometer off...

I guess I should have mentioned that what I was saying was for a working speedometer, if it is slipping or jumping there is no point in trying to make it accurate. but it would be easy enough to compare the ratio of error between what the odo is reading and what the speedo is reading and if...

    Speedometer off...

In the past what I did was: Take the car out on the highway note the odo setting at any mile marker. then drive 10 miles and note the odo setting again. if your odo says you went 13 miles then your speedo cable is turning 30% too fast so you need 30% more teeth in your trans gear. so 33 *...

8.75 diff - metal in oil (pictures). Is it ruined?

I put a super magnet on my drain plug, probably not the best place for it but it is better than nothing. I notice there is one installed in my 833od seemed like a good idea.

    Driveshaft length 8 3/4

Ideally, so I have been told, the slip joint is the furthest in when the car is at rest on all four wheels. That is to say when cruising there should be no bends on the ujoints.

    Speedo Assist

Have you checked the gear in the transmission, if the gear isn't installed correctly it could slip and cause what you are seeing. also you could drive around the neighborhood with the cable disconnected from the speedometer. if it inst spinning smoothly the problem isn't the speedometer.
