    clutch fork pivot question

I haven't been able to post pictures here for a while so I hope the following dimensions make sense. The one out of my aluminum four speed 340 bell with a 4.8 register hole is 1 3/4" high (1.73), 1 29/32" (1.91) wide at the bend, and slightly over 2" (2.03) wide at the top of the bend above the...

    made my custom shift linkage....

Looking at the first pics you posted, it looks like all you would need is to install the 1-2 shift rod on the transmission side of it's lever. Using the shortest transmission shift arms available to you will give the tightest shift pattern with any given shifter frame. Super Shifters use...

    a833od behind 383

If you've already got an A833 behind the 383, check the bearing retainer size. If it's a 4.8 diameter, pull it off the straight 4 speed and bolt it on the OD. The OD 833 shares the 308 front bearing with a lot of the later straight 4 speed versions and the 4.80 front bearing retainer...

    A833OD Questions

Straight 4 spd with 4.80 bearing retainer and overdrive both use a 308 front bearing in the transmission and both retainers share bolt patterns. That's why you can swap the 5.125 retainer for a 4.80. As stated above some have bored their bellhousing with the smaller bore out to 4.8. While it...

    best shifter

Hurst is Hurst, so it is not surprising you cannot make something else work. For quite some time now the shifter frame has been sold separate from the installation kit. As a result, if you have a Competition Plus shifter frame, you should be able to get the installation kit (mounting plate...

    5.2 magnum & A833

If your car was/is a stick shift car and has the original clutch linkage, choosing a diaphragm clutch and matching throwout bearing may be all you need to do to make it comfortable to drive. A diaphragm style clutch requires far less pedal pressure than the Borg & Beck three finger type Mopar...

    5.2 magnum & A833

Why would you need to modify any of your clutch linkage to run a 10.5" clutch? If the larger clutch requires a later bellhousing, comparing the bellhousing fulcrum (pivot) to input shaft centerline distance will tell you if your current arm will work. Even if your original didn't, using an arm...

    5.2 magnum & A833

273 flywheel, bellhousing, and starter should (notice I didn't say would, you gotta try it) bolt up. But if you're wanting to do it to run the same size clutch a slant six can overpower because a larger clutch won't bolt up to those components, I don't know why you would want to.

    5.2 magnum & A833

Every flywheel manufacturer shows a listing for a 130 tooth 10.5" neutral balance flywheel to be used in all LA, Magnum, and B(RB) blocks with internal balance six bolt cranks. Expanding on what CUDA69 says, not all cranks are drilled for a pilot bearing. Same are drilled, finish honed, and...

    Hurst Reverse LO RED knob

Here we go, as promised, and measured by my little, bought on sale, genuine Harbor Freight plastic digital calipers; the diameter is 1.123 inches, or in other words just a couple of thou under an inch and an eighth.

    5.2 magnum & A833

Throwout bearing with same inside diameter as 833 bearing retainer collar and bearing face to match type of pressure plate used. All 318s share same mounting face for bellhousing, so just use an LA 833 bell (some three speed bellhousings work also) that matches your bearing retainer diameter...

    Hurst Reverse LO RED knob

If you're talking about the original ones that came out in the early 70s, I've got one at home on my Super Shifter, and can have your answer after I get home late this afternoon and measure it.

Shifter position adjust for Gunslinger PG?

Agreed, if such levers are available. Is the shifter handle mean't for his specific model and equipment? If it is, then maybe it takes a different shifter frame and/or installation kit (mounting brackets, rods and arms, and related hardware) than what is currently in the car. One could always...

/6 with 4 Speed OD, rear gear recommendations?

Anytime you transfer torque through the countergear and not straight through the transmission by coupling the main drive gear (GM terms Chrysler terms eludes me at the moment) to the mainshaft (output in this case), the countergear shaft will load against the transmission case. Unbushed aluminum...

    Input Bearing Retainer Question

The size of the front bearing is what dictates the bearing retainer size, not the gearset. Transmission cases with the 308 front bearing can be fitted with the 4.8 or 5.125 retainers. The main reason for using the largest diameter retainer is to stabilize the OD gearset.

    which clutch has smoothest engagement?

Smoothest engagement would be a diaphragm pressure plate with twin disks (think McLeod Street Twin or something similar). Twin disk clutches are long lasting too, said to be almost impossible to wear out. Just got to get your head around the upfront cost and not cheap out like me.

    Hemi 4 Speed?

Why wimp out at somebody's suggestion it won't work, or that you can't do it, or that you won't like it. The 18 spline boxes were the strongest ones of all, and the "slick shifted" ones were the hot setup for up shifting from one gear to another (as in drag racing). The syncros have been MIA...

/6 with 4 Speed OD, rear gear recommendations?

My Feather Duster is nearly the same setup (mine has the aluminum 833OD, I didn't realize they could come with a three speed). After I had the flywheel turned and replaced the clutch at 288000 a year ago last summer, I checked my mileage. 31.4 running 14 inch wheels with 205/75 tires. Not the...

    best shifter

If any of you guys would be willing to teach me how to get my pictures out of iphoto (Mac book Pro) and into this thread, I could show you the Super Shifter mounted to a transmission and laying on a towel with the various components spread out.

    best shifter

When I bought my Super Shifter in the fall of 1971, I was told it wouldn't work on the street, that it was strictly for race cars. I believe it cost me about 130 dollars when you could buy a Competition Plus for less than 80. The arms were specific to the Super Shifter and so were the rods...

    t5 trans swap?

Good news, I'll give him a call this week. As far as pushing the bellevue spring of the diaphragm too far, the fingers of a Borg and Beck would be more likely to cause interference in this way than the modern raised cone diaphragm, but it's still not inconceivable. With the big window provided...

8 3/4 rear clunk when brakes are applied

First place I'd look too. Easy fix if that turns out to be the problem and you get it fixed before you blow out a U joint completely and take out the driveline or something else along with it.

    t5 trans swap?

Quick questions; Are you running the block plate between the bell and the block? Are you running a Borg & Beck (3 finger), or a diaphragm pressure plate? Are you running a magnum motor? A couple of thoughts; I just assumed the supplied block plate and clutch ball plate would stiffen the bell...

    shifting trouble

Even if the clutch didn't release at all, you would be able to shift by synchronizing the speed of the gears. When I had my four speed 421 2+2 "back in the day" I somehow managed to shove the throwout bearing though the bellevue spring of the diaphragm pressure plate. I drove that car every...

    t5 trans swap?

I appreciate the offer of a P M, but having followed this thread with great interest from it's beginning, I'm sure many others here will want you to share with them too. A little background to show why we decided get a shell to jig up with; My Feather is a factory 4 spd car and I'm very...

4 Speed- Hard to get out of reverse

Hurst shifters came with a round L shaped pin that slid through the center of the shifter arms and notch at the bottom of the shifter frame. They probably still sell them separate, but a piece of round rod (bolt shank, etc.) with a diameter just slides through the same way with get you by...

    t5 trans swap?

My Quick Time clearance bell came yesterday, now it's time to get my steel flywheel balanced for my cast crank (340) and buy a clutch. Because it is my back and forth to work car, and it's fast approaching nearly two grand for the suspension mods and V8 conversion bits, I'm leaning toward the...

    Clutches & Pressure plates?

Wanting the most bang for the buck (especially important in this Obama time), I went to the South Bend Clutch website at this suggestion. Spent twenty minutes of frustrating myself trying to navigate this site to get an idea of their products and pricing. The site is all hype, there is no...
