Frustrating gas just dumped out from the top of carb all over top engine!! Finally was able to get all of ignition hooked up properly and had good spark, was cranking on engine with a switch. Using a high pressure fuel pump through a regulator. The carbuerator on my 273 cuda is a 2 barrel Carter ball and ball. Its seems that may need further adjustment to lower psi to carb but I think that there is more to the issue then this. Any ideas why a carb would suddenly gush gas out around pluger rod area???

Could be just the float level adjustment. With the spark(s) disabled you can remove the top from the carb and set the float level on the car.

I am not familiar with the carb and something doesn't seem quite right about it was rebult by someone a few years back and has never ran. I checked quote at local carb shop the said that they would rebuld it and replace bushings $165, I don't like that idea much. Looking for a illustrated parts diagram with some factory specs, or rebuild instructions . I think its the stock 67 2 barrel Carter it has #1781 on side (pic attached). Found service manual for BBD at www.carburetor-parts.com but wasn't the same model. Youtube has some great videos but for 1 barrel ball and ball. Not sure what to do yet stick it out and try to do it myself or pay someone.

I just rebuilt mine with a kit from O'reillys comes w a very detailed exploded view. Very clear instructions. Even comes with all the little Jesus clips and ball checks. 16.99 for the kit.

Oh yeah float level . Are u measuring fuel pressure at the inlet. There's not a lot there to stop the flow. You'd have to either bypass the needle n seat by dirt obstructing the needle or possibly you've got a heavy float. Those synthetic things go bad and get heavy w fuel absorption and if you've brass floats , shake em make sure they ain't got fuel inside em sloshing around. Good luck.

Thanks going to try a few things with floats.Waiting on a small inline pressure guage from Summit racing, do you know the psi the Carter 2 barrel BB should be getting? Im also going to get the rebuild kit, I think I can work the problem out of the carb with some good instructions/diagrams maybe some videos to cross reference.

a standard fuel pump puts out about 4-5 pounds. if you are blowing fuel past the needle and seat, then it isnt doing its job and allowing the fuel bowl to fill up. OR the float is way out of adjustment. the last (1967)BBD i had has the needle valve in the fuel inlet with a check ball. i think over 5 lbs of fuel pressure is too high for a 2 barrel IMO. thats what run with my 4 barrels

Decided that the old Carter BBD had too many problems, Throttle shaft screws broken in place, bad return spring setup, and adjusting without a flow test of some kind seemed too time consuming, not my expertise!, and just seemed too poorly engineered.I'm going to swap the old one out for a rebuld one from O'reilys better setup and cost not much more then to rebuild the old one. I am guessing this model is setup for evap control. Not sure what this(arrow in pic) is. Maybe the rear vent area made to run to a evap canister? If so, were would I run the canister? Any ideas?

Some of the later model BBD carbs had a solenoid operated by a computer to adjust fuel air ratio. That might be what your arrow points to but I'm not sure. I think they mostly came on Jeeps.

Found the carter BBD service manual download. Turns out it is a Idle Enrichment System port, this is used with the silinoid to get a good air/fuel mixture when starting the car. My car doen't have this setup so I'm not going to mess with it. I have change my mind once again about the carb I am going to get. I found a good rebuild from 73 dodge BBD. This one is same carb with the emission controls on the bowl vent. This one was a whole lot cheaper then rebuild or the other carbs. Any suggestions for getting a good idle setup when installing a new rebuilt BBD??

steve, you are going to run into problems using the mid 70's emission carbs on your 67. you have vacuum line and jetting issues on these carbs. this is the problem with buying a carb from a retail store, as they have later carbs in stock and treat any 318 as a same application 1966 to 80. Also makes me appreciate the importance of saving good cores, even if I have no need to have that sort of carb for any of my cars. Top body plates get warped, shafts wear, etc.

I do have a 1970 B+B carb core, that should be a best fit for a 67 app $15.
