1967 Match Race ~ Barracuda 383/280 HP vs. Mustang GT 390/320 HP

New 5.0s are going mid 11's with a converter, driveshaft, offroad exhaust, tires and a tune. Thats knocking a second off the stock et.
You might knock a second off the et of a old car with the same mods but you would be going from high 14's into the 13's, not mid 12's to mid 11's.

I had a stock 340 heads & short block in my '69 Swinger.
MoPar solid cam/springs, holley intake, headers, convertor, 4:30 gear, 9" slicks.
ran 11.80's with this street combo.
Stock, it ran 14.40's.

Very impressive performance, I have had a few built 340's but they could never make the power to go 11:80 ( around 450 HP @ 3500LBS I would guess) with stock heads, compression and the factory AVS carb. What Mopar cam are you using to get these numbers?

Yea the demon is very impressive, most of the built stroker engines I have watched run are not putting down 11:20's.

I don't know how you can have a stroker & not go fast.
Mismatched parts I guess.
I had a 360 in the Demon before the 340. It ran the same ET's & was built as a street engine.
The 360 had more torque & about the same HP.

Our other race car is a '67 Barracuda, back halfed.
W2 headed 414 stroker.
10.28 @ 130 1/4 - 6.38 @ 106 1/8 mile. Shifting @ 6600 RPM.
This engine combo could be reved to 7500 & would run quicker.
Just got the convertor back & matched up to my engine combo, can't wait to see if it picks up.

I have always built my stuff on the conservitive side & have been very pleased with the results.
Mainly, because I'm not rich & I research what I'm going to do.
Listen & ask questions. Separate the BullShit from the truth to make a decesion.

I have a buddy with a Street driven '68 Barracuda with a stroker 318 & Eddy heads that runs 10.90's thru the exhaust.

He still has places to find more power on it.

Is it possible the Chrysler didn't want the Wedge to overshadow the HEMI?
You hear stories on how the 440-6 was just as fast as the Street HEMI.

Mike,

In late-1966 thru 1968 > Many of the Division Heads at Mopar were very protective of their Cars.

The Hemi Engine Division wanted 'no' competition from the 440 Engines.

The Plymouth GTX and Dodge Coronet R/T 'Marketing Division' wanted 'no' competition from the 383.

Especially in late-1967 and 1968, when they would 'not' allow a 440/375 HP Engine to be installed in
the 'new' Road Runner or Super Bee, let alone a 'Package Stock Option' High Performance version
of the 'new' 1968 ~ 383/335 HP.

And there was 'much resistance' about putting a 'worthy 383' in the 1967 A-Body.

Mike,

In 1967,

Mopar was all 'hyped up' to promote the 67' GTX 440 and 67' R/T 440 for the Stock Class... 'B/S and B/SA'
to compete with the Pontiac GTO 400 and Oldsmobile 4-4-2.

They weren't quite ready for a Big-Block A-Body.
