1968 Barracuda Formula S 340 Spring Special

Not a lot today. Worked on the 72 F100 short box 4x4 that @gtx6970 are restoring. Do have the blaster lined up for next Wednesday so need to get a bit more done before then.

I am curious how your gonna cut the frame rails to splice together. I would imagine tricky to figure out where to cut so they butt up together correctly?

You probably already know but second gen Barracuda have the lower style line on the door fade into the lower 1/4 panel. Most restored second gen cars are missing that faint style line in the lower 1/4 panel. On most the lower 1/4 are completely smooth missing that style line. The full AMD 1/4s I have in storage have that style line stamped into them. Would be great to see yours have that detail there when done.

I know nothing about Barracudas, this is my first... do you have a photo that you can show me where you are talking about so I am sure?

Its in this area. If one of the 1/4s you have there aren't bondo'ed up you should be able to see it. Its a faint style line that quickly fades into 1/4 panel. I would have to pull my AMDs out of storage to get a better picture but both of them have it and its easy to see on those new AMDs. My '69 is bondo'ed up both sides and missing those lines.

Walking around at the many second gens at Carlisle vast majority are missing those style lines. But I did see 2 or 3 cars that had them. A common restoration f-up on these cars because its a detail easily over looked.

Rear pan pulled down to what is going in the Formula S. One more day of getting it trimmed out around where the splice will be made then it’s ready to blast next week. Inner wheel wheels ready to make patches for the original. The one piece that was better than the donor was the spare hold down/fuel tank hanger bracket. She will sport one original piece of metal behind the rear wheels!

Need to spend time gutting the interior and glass so the blaster does not destroy more than rust and she is ready for round 1 of blasting. Once the rear floor is accurately positioned and welded in the rest of the original quarters will come off and a bit of rocker panel exploratory surgery to see what to do there then phase 2 blasting in the rockers and behind the quarter panels. The quarters and outer rockers will be installed then the floor pan will come out of the donor and into the Formula S. THEN on the rotisserie it will go and the blaster will come here for the day and blast EVERYTHING.

This is the process I was planning to use and the previous owner sent me some pages from a textbook he used when teaching kids back in the day. Guess I’m not as smart as I think I am inventing something new.

What I did on my Dart to replace the torsion bar crossmember and a section of front framerail. Combo plug welds and seam weld with the plate inside makes for strong easy repairs that are invisible.

Jim

have you looked at the barracuda to see if the line is still there

On the driver side, there’s enough wrinkles down there. It’s tough to actually decide if it’s still there or not on the passenger side you can just make it out and feel it.

My car is green and has been crappily repainted and cleared.
I can see the quarter lower body line once a year when the angle of the sun matches the angle of the sun during the summer solstice at Stone Henge.

I never knew about that quarter panel style line until I bought 2 full AMD quarters which have that small faint style line.

Yes very very faint which is why its a detail thats easy to miss

When blocking my car they used tape on the body line. You sand up to it, then reposition the tape and sand down to it. Helps keep it sharp and from moving...

There is another one on the roof for the Notchbacks that seems to disappear. Highlighted here due to the lighting.

Another area you have to be protective of and make sure you don't lose detail
