I am looking into buying a chrysler 408 crate engine from summit racing. I currently have a 318 in my 1969 barracuda. what would I need in order to make this conversion? would my current automatic transmission work with the 408?
I would suggest that you beef up the transmission, and if you have a 7.25" rear axle, I'd look into replacing it, too. As far as bolting it in, as 70aarcuda said, probably a flexplate or correctly balanced converter, and a different driver's side motor mount bracket.
You'll want to open up the exhaust, too. Suggest dual 2¼ or 2½ inch pipes. Although the 340/360 A-body exhaust manifolds breathe better than those on your 318, they are hard to find and pricey when you do. You may be better serve $ wise and performance wise with a good set of headers.
I'm in the process of doing the same thing on my 69 cuda. I did as suggested above, changed the rear to an 8 3/4 and trans to a 727. I'm using headers on a 408 that I built. If all goes well should be running soon. If I can help on some of the little stuff let me know.
And if that stroker puts out any real touque be prepared to start breaking things, been there done that..but i've fixed all the weal links in my drivetrain..
