and I need to replace the oem front shocks on our 99 Explorer, the left one just started to seep. Other than some trans troubles....and the transfer case going south form never changing the fluid.... and basic maintenance I have had to put absolutely no money into this thing. Our first Explorer, a 93 went over 400k miles with nothing but 1 trans build and basic maintenance. Pretty much replaced it just because of how ugly it had gotten.

One of the reasons I used to piss off corporate when I worked at Monro. (It's a northeast company, you might have to google it.) They had an upsale policy of replacing struts and shocks every 50,000 miles. I refused to upsale.

When I had my shop I used to get a lot of people who went to Monro for something like an oil change or NYSI and walk out with a $2000 estimate for struts all the way around. The brainiacs at Monro, trying to upsell and pad their paychecks would put things like struts and shocks on the estimate and overlook things like what was really wrong or just tried to sell something not needed.

I had one woman walk into my shop with a $1500 estimate for new struts and springs all the way around when what was really wrong was a ball joint - $75 installed.

Ouch....shop by where my sister used to leave did this sort of stuff.....and worse. Told my sister she needed all new brakes, was a Duster with drums. Said she needed hoses, wheel cylinders etc.....Was the middle of winter and my garage was tied up so I told her to let them do it. She went to pick it up and threw a piece of cardboard under it to take a look. After looking she told them she wanted the old parts back. Claimed that they tossed them and the dumpster had just been picked up. Demanded they put it on the lift and show her. Refunded the $$ they charge her and tacked on some extra funds. She raised hell. Was a very small community in Sussex County NJ. Word got around of what happened and the doors were locked within 2 months...
