  1. 1972 340 VIN # 3B1153930 Build date/unit # 40438190 (thanks for the correction)
  2. Cast crank,
Standard Bore, ( I believe ) Pistons are not marked oversize, Holding calipers and taking the picture was tricky.
One head is casting # 2531894 (1968-70 340 X head ) the other is # 3671587 ( 1973-74 360 w/ 1.88/1.60 valves ).
I purchased this for a project / changed direction. I was told it was in running condition. I removed the pan and oil pick up tube for my current project. This has a truck pan and pick up tube now. Edelbrock torker intake included. Needs a crank pulley and damper bolt. Please see pictures. I have pics of the lower end that I can send upon request. I work nights and am away from the computer a lot. Asking 1600.00 Located in Northern Colorado

That is the 10000 day build date and unit number, no the VIN.

VIN is on a pad, pass side, just below the block drain plug.

Probably originally a 73 model year engine.

Or it could have been one of the very last of the 72 model year... The block was cast on 5-30-72, but if went through right away, could have made it in the last production of early June of 72 before they shut down and tooled up for 73 model year.... The VIN # just above the oil pan on the passenger side below the engine mount will tell....

Also, it looks like it has the high compression pistons with the four eyebrows on it... 72 and 73 were lower compression, and I don't think they had the 4 eyebrows... I've never torn down an original 72 or 73 340 before, but have done many 68 - 71 340 engines and those look like the early 10.5 compression pistons to me from the pictures...

Not to argue with you Karl, but the 68-71 340s had the two eyebrow positive deck height piston. Not the 4 eyebrow. You got it backwards.

I'm putting the 71 340 back together and here are the pistons in it.... However it looks like the eyebrows are deeper... STD bore, so those are stock pistons...

Looking at the picture of the vin 3B153930, that is a 73. Looks like the 3B15 got double stamped.
