I have for sale a rebuildable 1972 model year 340 short block assembly. The casting date looks like 9-30-71 which would make it a very early 1972 application. It is complete but definitely needs to be redone. The VIN stamped just above the oil pan rail looks like 21290792. The #1, 2 and 9 looks weird though like it was stamped twice. STANDARD bore and STANDARD rod and main steel crank. This short block has NEVER been apart since the factory put it together. It’s been sitting in my garage for a very long time and it’s time to sell it. I would like to get $650 for the whole thing plus shipping and I can help with that.

They were taken off and sold to a friend a while ago. They were the 1.88 intake valve -915 "J" heads that would be stock on that engine for 72.

It should have had a cast crank too but it looks like that one has a forged crank, so it could have had a 2.02, 1.60, J-head

looks like someone changed the pistons, 4 eyebrows from stock 2 eyebrows

Last of the forged crank motors. Were the mains and rod journals ground undersized?

In 1972, the engines were made with steel cranks, lower compression, 4 eyebrow pistons and heads with 1.88/1.60 valves. 1973 had the cast cranks. This short block did not have the pistons changed since it's a 1972 model year engine. The 68-71 engines had the higher compression, 2 eyebrow pistons and steel cranks. The block is standard bore and the steel crank is standard rods and mains.

I had a 72 340 duster and it was a cast crank, I also had another 72 340 motor and that had a cast crank. I have a set of J heads that are 71 and they have 2.02 intakes.

From what I understand, some late 72 engines had cast cranks. "J" heads came both ways, with 2.02 intakes and 1.88 intakes.
