My buddy is contemplating getting a pretty nice 2006 Dodge Ram 3500. He was asking if I knew anything about that era automatic transmission, but I don't. My TCD 2500 is a 94. I'm guessing there are plenty of members who would have feedback if the automatics of that era are good, bad or indifferent. What say you?

Most likely the 48RE. They are the heavy duty 727 with the overdrive. Should be OK. Just turn the OD off when towing. If you have the last 9 of the VIN I can run it and tell you for sure.

they are fine if not abused and some maintenance done to them like anything else.If this is a diesel and the wick has been turned up then beware as the diesel can be turned up pretty high with just a tuner and the tranny just is not made to take that stock. If its gas then no issue except as stated above abuse and maintenance.Depending on terrain and how much towing the gear spread can bit a bit far apart for the gas, hills and such where you can't keep it in the power band.

99% sure that in 06 the diesel could have a 48RE or a 545RFE, the gas was only offered with a 545RFE. The 48RE did have a problem with breaking soliniod plate bolts, there are factory and aftermarket upgrades available to remedy this.

Yep could be either or, need to run the VIN to tell for sure. Or look at the pan. The 545 it a better transmission but the 48 is ok as long as it has been not been abused.

If you go by sheer weight alone.....a 545RFE should be twice as good. Picking up one of them things makes picking up a 727 feel like you picked up a Lego...lol.

There must be a typo in the VIN. It comes back as an invalid. The last eight should be something like this KN690824

Well good grief, the dealer who provided the VIN must be smoking crack. Here's the one off the ad. :realcrazy:

That's a good VIN. Build Date September 2, 2005 Automatic 48RE Transmission

Would be a 47RE or 48RE. My 07 had a 48 RE with 285k miles. Never a problem. Maintained it well and had a deep Mag Hytek deep pan on it.
